Redecorating can be expensive and come with a hefty carbon footprint, but it doesn’t have to! Check out these DIY decor ideas to help you redo without breaking the bank or harming the planet.
One thing that I’ve learned about decorating on a budget: use what you have before you buy new. Sometimes just rearranging a room can make it feel new without buying a stick of furniture or even any new art. Before you shop, take a lazy Sunday to move furniture around and see if you can get a fresh new look out of what you already have on hand.
You also don’t have to confine yourself to one room. Maybe your office would look cool and cozy if you stole a chair from the living room for that empty corner, or you could solve your bedroom nightstand woes by swapping your existing night stand with an end table from another room. Get creative! One of my favorite pieces in my studio is a sideboard that I “made” by turning an old Ikea bookshelf on its side and throwing a vintage tablecloth over it (see the photo at the top). Now, I’ve got hidden storage that fits neatly under a window and holds a lamp and my office supplies on top. Bam!
Of course, sometimes you need a new art piece or to revamp some thrifted furniture to spruce up a stale space, and when that happens, it’s time to get a little bit craftier!
