Vegan Lip Gloss from Lip Glosserie
Jinny S. of Lip Glosserie makes vegan lip gloss in a whole line of delicious flavors!
I was lucky enough to meet Jinny at The Summer Indie Craft Experience (ICE) here in Atlanta on June 8th and 9th. The ICE gals put together several shows throughout the year, and I love the chance to shop handmade and meet indie crafters from all over the country. Jinny traveled all the way from Austin, Texas for the show!
Jinny’s lip glosses enticed me partly because they’re vegan and partly because she makes interesting flavors, like chai tea and gingerbread. YUM!
Wait, so what’s not vegan about lip gloss?
Conventional lip gloss usually contains beeswax (from bees) and sometimes lanolin (from sheep). Since vegans eschew animal products, those animal-derived ingredients are out. I checked the ingredients, and it looks like Jinny is using candelila wax – a natural alternative to beeswax – along with some natural vegetable butters like mango butter to create her lip glosses.
Because she doesn’t use beeswax, Jinny’s lip glosses are a bit softer at room temperature than what you might be used to. I prefer the softer consistency – it’s easier to apply!
Jinny was kind enough to answer a few questions about herself, what she does, and why she does it…
Feelgood Style: How did you get started making lip gloss?
Jinny S.: Four years ago, I was working as a lawyer at a big law firm in New York. I knew it wasn’t my passion so I started thinking about what I wanted to do instead. I had a huge interest in makeup and bath and body products so I started looking into how to turn that into a business. After a brief attempt at trying to sell imported cosmetics, I quickly realized that I should really make my own line of products and after doing the research, founded Lip Glosserie and haven’t looked back since!
FGS: Why is it important to you to use vegan ingredients?
JS: Mainly, I think it’s unnecessary to use ingredients that are animal by-products when there are perfectly suitable vegan ones that do the same job. Personally, I also like the way the vegan ingredients feel on my skin and lips. While many lip balms use beeswax to achieve a creamy texture, I actually prefer the smoother feel that vegetable wax gives to my lip balms.
FGS: Tell me something about yourself that’s not in your standard bio.
JS: Wow, that’s a good question! The most important thing about me right now is that in addition to running Lip Glosserie, I became a mom this past year. My son is now ten months old and while it has not been easy to run this business with him in my life (I never did give myself a maternity leave), if given the chance to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing.
FGS: Where can folks find your products?
JS: For folks outside Central Texas, my products can mainly be found online at my Etsy store. But if you’re in the Central Texas area, you can find a list of stores that carry my products on my main site. My site also has my Show Schedule; this year, in addition to having recently visited Atlanta for the Summer ICE show, I will be traveling to Brooklyn, Asheville, San Francisco, Chicago, and who knows where else!
