Beauty Industry Helps Acid Burn Victims

Saira, an acid burn victim who fought back in Pakistan

Last week, I talked a bit about some downsides of the beauty industry, so today I thought I’d share a video about a place where they’re getting it right.

In Pakistan, it’s all too common for women to suffer from acid burns at the hands of their suitors. Anyone can purchase bottles of acid on the street, and men will use the bottles to retaliate when a woman’s family refuses a marriage proposal or the woman is less than obedient. This is the story of how working at a beauty salon helped one Pakistani woman get the courage to fight back:

Like the video mentions, she’s the first woman in Pakistan to press charges against her attacker.

That video is from 2009, and I couldn’t find any information about what’s happened with Saira’s case since she filed it. If anyone has more information, I’d love to know how this shakes out. What happened to her is horrifying, and her attacker deserves whatever punishment he gets, in my opinion.
