Treat Your Feet with a Homemade Foot Scrub

Dry, cracked heels got you down? Here’s how I fixed my feet in a few simple steps.

My marathon training is over, and I have to tell you, it did a number on my feet! My heels have been dry and cracking, and I was at my wits end trying to sort out how to fix them up.

I even resorted to a not-so-green pedicure at the salon near my house. The pedicure helped a bit, but after a few days my heels were back to their original state. Boo! Then, I read a post over at my friend Karen’s blog about her DIY heel scrub. What perfect timing! The recipe below is adapted from that one, and I added a couple of extra steps to help battle super damaged tootsies.

1. Scrub those heels!

It’s easy as pie to make a heel scrub! In a small cup, combine:

  • 1/4c sea salt or epsom salts
  • 1T sweet almond oil

Mix the salt and oil until you have a thick paste, then sit down on the side of your tub and scrub, scrub, scrub! You want to dedicate a few solid minutes of scrubbing to each heel.

2. Rinse

Rinse your feet with warm water. This is a good time to give yourself a quick foot rub, too. You deserve it, especially if you’ve been distance running! You want to get all of the salt off, but it’s totally fine if your feet are still a little bit oily. In fact, it’s ideal.

3. Put on Socks

After you’re all rinsed, grab a comfy pair of socks, and wear them for at least 30 minutes to an hour after the scrub. The socks will help your feet absorb all of the oil, leaving them baby soft!

Like Karen mentions, it might take more than one treatment to totally repair your heels, but you’ll start to see at least some results after the very first one. Have you guys done any DIY home treatments for cracked, dry heels? I’d love to hear what’s worked for you in the comments!
