Is there a little bit of a fall nip in the air where you are? When the weather gets cool and dry, it might take a little love to maintain the soft, healthy lips that were such a breeze during the summer.

Dry, cold air saps moisture from your lips and can cause the skin to get tough, scratchy, and even to crack. That doesn’t mean you have to resign yourself to a winter of discomfort! It’s easy as pie to give your lips the extra TLC they need to stay soft and kissable all winter long.

Step 1: Exfoliate!

1. Exfoliate with a DIY Lip Scrub

If your lips are chapped or split, you don’t want to start with this step – you don’t want to make the wound any worse and slow healing. Already dealing with chapping? Skip ahead to step 3, and start this process once your lips have healed.

Are your lips in OK shape, but they need a little pampering? The first step is to gently slough away dead skin cells. Check out this DIY sugar mint lip scrub to exfoliate your lips and get them ready for the next step. You can exfoliate your lips every other day, or as needed to keep your lips soft and kissable.

Step 2: Moisturize!

2. Moisturize

Exfoliating removes dead skin, but it can also sap some of the moisture from your lips.

Following up with a good moisturizer helps prevent chapping and keeps your lips healthy and smooth. After exfoliating, just massage a couple of drops of olive, jojoba, sweet almond, or your favorite carrier oil into your lips to give them a moisture boost.

Step 3: Maintain!

3. Maintain with Homemade Lip Balm

A good lip balm helps lock moisture in to prevent drying and cracking. Apply any time you’re headed out into the cold. If you’re starting with step 3 because your lips are chapped or split already, this lip balm will protect the delicate skin on your lips from further damage, so they can heal.

Organic Authority has a great, simple recipe for a DIY lip balm. If you want to make a vegan lip balm instead, you can use candelila wax in place of the beeswax, 1:1.
