Sunburns are painful and not too hot for your health, either. Luckily, there are lots of natural sunburn remedies to soothe damaged skin!

So, maybe you forgot to re-apply your sunscreen after a dip in the ocean, and now you’re dealing with sunburned skin. A sunburn is more than just uncomfortable – a bad sunburn ups your chances of getting skin cancer, and treating burned skin within the first eight hours helps mitigate that damage significantly.

There are plenty of store-bought sunburn remedies, but those over-the-counter solutions often contain mystery ingredients and come in single use plastic packaging. Boo on that! Check out these DIY solutions for treating a sunburn instead!

Use Tea for Natural Sunburn Relief

"tea When you think summer fun, a steamy mug of hot tea is probably not your beverage of choice, but the tannins in tea are a great way to treat sunburned skin without harmful chemicals.

Rather than downing a cup of tea, though, you apply this sunburn remedy topically, so that your skin can absorb the tea’s healing compounds. If you want to make this – or really any of these natural remedies – more soothing, try sticking your spray bottle of tea mixture in the fridge for maximum cooling power. You can get the tea sunburn treatment recipe here!

Next>> Choose Aloe

Aloe Sunburn Treatment

"aloe" The polysaccharides in aloe sap can help your skin repair itself after a sunburn. Using aloe straight from the plant is best, but if you need to go store-bought, shy away from the artificially-colored, bright green variety and look for truly natural aloe instead.

Have you been wanting to grow aloe but were worried because you have a black thumb? Aloe plants are succulents, and they’re pretty hard to kill. They don’t need much water to grow, and they grow like gangbusters even indoors. They just need indirect sunlight, so stick your aloe plant by a window.

Soothe Your Sunburn with Lavender Vinegar

"lavender" It may not smell great, but vinegar actually can help repair your damaged skin. Try this lavender-infused vinegar recipe. The herbs help mask the smell a bit, and lavender is soothing to the skin, so it should provide a boost of pain relief.

Spritz your vinegar mixture onto burned skin, and let it dry, then wash it off with a cool, damp cloth or in the shower after about 15-20 minutes. You can store your spritz bottle of vinegar in the fridge for extra cooling relief. Since this is a totally food-based recipe, you can also use some on your skin and some on your next salad! Yum!

Next>> Make a Baking Soda Spray

Make a Baking Soda Spray

"baking Baking soda helps your skin trap moisture, which is not only helpful in soothing a burn but in preventing peeling later on.

To make your baking soda spray, mix about one teaspoon of baking soda in a one ounce spray bottle full of water. Spritz and let it dry on your skin to help you retain moisture. You can add a few drops of lavender or chamomile essential oil to this mix, if you like. Both of these oils are soothing for your skin. Just remember to give your bottle a good shake before you spray if you add oils, because the oils will float to the top of the bottle after the mixture has been sitting for a while.
