It’s that time of year once again. We’re all prepared to deck those halls, trim those trees, and make our homes look as festive as possible.

If you’re looking for a more environmentally friendly holiday this year, you’ll probably want to avoid store-bought paper and plastics decorations that will ultimately find their way into the garbage. Instead, consider decorating with a few of these natural choices, any of which you can toss into the compost bin come January.

"gourds"

1. Gourds

Beauty and versatility – what a combination! A collection of various gourds on your front porch or as a centerpiece, will add that fall flair to your home.

Martha Stewart also has a cool project on how to make garland out of gourds that you may want to check out. It’s listed as a Halloween decoration, but gourds are festive throughout the holiday season. For more of a wow factor, try this carved squash centerpiece. There’s no better way to beautify your mantle or table.

Next>> Collect pine cones for some shabby chic holiday decor!

2. Pine Cones

You can turn pine cones that you collect in your yard or at the park into a sweet garland. Just grab some twine, tie knots at the top of each, and presto: instant holiday cheer. String it across a doorway, over your mantle, or even outside over your garage door. Paint them or add some glitter for added holiday flair.

I also came across this cool pine cone chandelier idea you might want to try. The directions mention fake flowers, but you could easily substitute some dried flowers to make it an eco-friendly project.

Next>> Add a splash of color with fall leaves.

3. Fall Leaves

It might be a bit late in the season for some people, but if you’re in a warmer climate, you might still be able to find leaves in wonderful shades of yellow, orange, and red. They would look great scattered on your mantle or tabletop during the holidays. A leaf bouquet is a fun family project to get your kids involved with. String some leaves together and place them across your doorways for a festive fall atmosphere.

4. Twigs and Sticks

Twigs and sticks add a rustic appeal to a holiday gathering.

You can go all out by arranging them into an attractive wreath, or keep things simple by placing them in a vase with some colorful marbles and pebbles on the bottom. Want to amp up the festive appeal even more? Add some adorable ornaments to the ends of each stick to create cool ornament trees.
