It’s that time of year again. It’s getting colder, it’s gloomy outside, and you haven’t seen the sun in a week straight. Daydreams of jetting off to a gorgeous island in the Caribbean become daily distractions until you finally, FINALLY, give in and book that week away in paradise!

Leading up to the trip you are giddy and pre-planning outfits; matching this bathing suit with that sarong, these flats with that maxi dress, and trying to choose colours that will make your tan pop. The thought of sun damage, and the havoc it can wreak on your skin, is probably the furthest thing from your mind as you prepare to get your tan on.

But before you take off for a week of fun in the sun, have you given proper thought to your skin?

The Sun Ain’t So Fun

We all know that the sun is harmful to our skin and that overexposure to its UV rays can cause significant damage to our skin. Some vacationers downplay a week of daily sun exposure, in locations where the sun’s rays may be stronger, as acceptable because it doesn’t happen that often, however, just that one week of consistent exposure can leave you with lasting effects.

Contrary to popular belief, a tan is not healthy. In fact, it is a tell-tale sign of skin damage and the tanned colour is your skin’s attempt at preventing UV rays from doing any further damage to the sensitive skin cells in your epidermis.

Even more unhealthy – the sunburn. When you burn, the sun’s rays are actively killing your living skin cells right into the deep layers of your skin. This is not a good look for us.

While most of us try to plan accordingly, sometimes in our rush to get away we forget some of favourite products. I can’t tell you how many times I have been too excited to leave for vacation that I forget my face cleanser, my body lotion, even my bathing suit. True story.

Instead of buying over-priced everyday moisturizers, or facial cleansers that are laced with chemicals which you probably can’t even pronounce, look around you. Take stock of the local ingredients provided to you by good ol’ Mother Nature.

Since I’ve been in this position a few times myself, I have discovered 3 quick fixes for naturally beautiful skin while on vacation!

1. Hello, Aloe!

In almost every Caribbean and Central American country I have visited there are fresh aloe vera plants. These plants make for a nice, quick, and free(!) natural skin remedy after those long days in the hot sun. You can also often find aloe products in the store, but beware! Many of them contain artificial colors and less-than-natural ingredients. The plant is definitely best.

Aloe vera has been used as a skin treatment for hundreds of years, and of all the benefits we know of aloe today, skin care is possibly the most sought after remedy.

By rubbing fresh aloe vera into your skin you are hydrating any cracked, dry, or burnt skin and helping to restore its natural softness in a remarkably gentle and non-abrasive way. Aloe vera also helps to alleviate any pain caused by overexposure to sun, and the natural oxidizing compounds found in aloe vera can help your skin regenerate and ward off infection.

So if your skin is a little burnt, sore, and tight just break off a piece of the plant and let Mother Nature work her magic!

2. Fight Sun Spots with Lemons

Now while it’s probably unrealistic for me to tell you to stay out of the sun on your vacation (Heck I wouldn’t even listen to me!) there are some other UV effects to take into consideration while on your vacation.

If you are one of those lucky ones who may get to go away more than once a winter, live in an area that gets a lot of sunshine, or a place that has high UV levels, you might start to see the effects of overexposure in the form of those annoying little sun spots. These sun spots can develop over time and act as a warning sign of skin damage. They are not the most welcomed addition to your skin, but luckily you can take action while on your holiday and start to minimize the look and severity of these spots.

Ideally, you should do this treatment at night or before you go to sleep as vitamin C, when exposed to sunlight, can react negatively and could possibly cause your skin to darken. We’re lightening here, not darkening, so make sure your skin is well rinsed before heading out into the sun.

Simply grab a lemon off the tree, they seem to be everywhere in hot and sunny destinations, juice it, and start dabbing the juice directly on your sun spots.

Lemon juice contains citric acid and is a natural skin lightener. By applying the juice to sun spots daily you can start to gradually lighten each spot, making your skin tone more even, and younger looking.

If you prefer to do an exfoliating type of treatment simply mix the juice of a lemon with some sugar and rub the mixture directly on to your spots. Whether you are staying in a resort, hotel, or even motel, sugar should be quite easy to find.

Leave the lemon juice on the areas you want to target for only about 10-15 minutes. I find anything longer than that may start to tingle a little, and believe me, when you are in a hot sunny place you usually want a nice soothing sensation. After your time is up, rinse it all off with cool water and dab dry. Your skin may feel tight afterwards but any moisturizer, or aloe vera, should fix that.

Next>> Thank You, Honey!

3. Thank You, Honey!

Finally, my last quick fix for naturally beautiful skin on vacation is a sweet little mask made of one simple ingredient that can usually be found in your hotel’s restaurant: honey.

While you may think a honey mask just sounds sticky and annoying, the therapeutic properties of using honey on your skin might even outweigh the taste advantages.

It has been shown that honey possesses anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties, making it an effective facial treatment to cleanse your skin and lock the moisture in. Honey also has anti-irritant properties which can help to soothe sun-baked and irritated skin, for those days when your face has seen too much sun.

Simply rinse your face with warm water to open up the pores, apply the honey to your face and leave it for 30 minutes. After your time is up, rinse your face with warm water, then again with cool water to close your pores, and dab your skin dry.

This simple and sweet mask will leave your skin feeling hydrated and supple, and its antioxidant properties will help to combat free radical damage which can come from too much exposure to the sun.

Naturally Beautiful Skin Anywhere

While a vacation is a time to unwind and simply relax, you don’t want to forget about protecting your skin while you are out frolicking in the sun. Whether you diligently pack your suitcase and double-check everything, or you’re like me and forget to pack your everyday necessities, you can find all the ingredients you need for clean, healthy, and naturally beautiful skin no matter what sunny destination you may be in! The key is knowing what to look for.
