"winter

The time is upon us to change our skincare routine. Moving from the warm and humid days of summer into the dry and cold ones of winter can take a toll on your skin. The key to any great winter skin routine is keeping the moisture up! Cold and blustery winter winds can suck the life out of skin and leave it looking dull. Combine that with dry and flaky patches due to low air moisture and you have a recipe for skin trouble. Here are a few simple ways to change up your skin routine for winter.

1. Cleansing

The first, and most essential, step to any skin routine is cleansing. Using a gentler and creamier cleanser during these months can ensure that you will cleanse without stripping your skin of its precious oils. Over on Care 2, there is a simple recipe for a creamy cleanser. If you have oily skin try this recipe from Organic Authority. You’ll get the moisturizing effects from the honey without leaving your skin overly oily. Keep in mind too, that although it may be tempting, use only luke warm to cold water to cleanse. As the temperature drops, it feels great to take a hot shower or soak in a hot bath, but the heat can dry out your skin too!

2. Exfoliating

In general, it’s good to exfoliate your skin about once a week to slough away any of the dead skin cells. You can do it more or less depending on your skin type, of course, but doing it too much can damage your skin. There is definitely too much of a good thing when it comes to skin care too! In the winter, though, dry and flaky skin is more prevalent. If you need to amp up your exfoliating to a couple of times a week, you should switch to a gentler exfoliant. Use a warm and damp washcloth to wipe your facial cleanser off. You’ll still reap the exfoliating benefits from the washcloth but it will be much gentler on the skin. Alternatively, you can add a 1/2 a teaspoon or so of baking soda to any face wash that you use to create a gentle exfoliator.

3. Moisturizing

Moisture! Moisture! Moisture! It’s the word of the season. There is such a lack of it during these upcoming months, so it’s important to replace it. If you want a simple moisturizer, try replacing your usual moisturizer with a facial oil. They moisturize beautifully without clogging pores and soak right into your skin leaving it soft and supple. The facial oil is a great product to use at night after your cleansing routine so that it has time to be absorbed into your skin. One of my favorite facial oils is the Weleda Almond Soothing Facial Oil, it isn’t overly greasy and makes my skin baby soft. In the morning, you’ll want something a little less oily but just as moisturizing. Also, even though it’s winter, sunscreen is still key! A great product is the Alba Botanica SPF 30 sunblock for face. It isn’t too heavy, absorbs quickly, and keeps my skin moisturized and protected all day.

Changing your skin routine doesn’t have to be a big production. There are just a few minor adjustments that need to be made so you can maintain your glow through the dreary and cold season. So, what’s your winter skin routine? Do you have any favorite products or recipes that you rely on to get your skin through the harsh winter months? I would love to hear some of your ideas and routines! Feel free to leave any comments, questions, or links.
