Remember the book review <\/a>I did on \u201cOn the Wings of Self Esteem\u201d by Dr. Louise Hart last month?\u00a0 Well, I recently had the opportunity to interview Dr. Hart on her book and how self esteem relates to beauty.\u00a0 Take a look:<\/p>\n

What defines self-esteem?<\/strong>
\nVery simply, it means esteeming yourself.\u00a0 Self-esteem is essential for mental health and well-being.<\/p>\n

There has been a lot of confusion about self-esteem.\u00a0 I want to clarify that it is NOT egotism, conceit, and narcissism.\u00a0
\nReal self-esteem means knowing you are lovable, worthwhile, cand capable.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Can those who have lower self esteem build it?<\/strong>
\nAbsolutely!\u00a0 As adults, we are in charge of our self-esteem.\u00a0 In my book \u2014On the Wings of Self-Esteem\u2014 I discuss many, many ways to do that.<\/p>\n

If so, what are the best ways to do that?<\/strong>
\nPerhaps the most important way is to become aware of your self-talk, the inner commentary on everything in life.\u00a0 Once you notice the negative talk \u2013 the \u201cstinkin\u2019 thinking\u201d \u2013 you can begin to talk differently, to encourage yourself and become your own best friend.\u00a0 It\u2019s a long-term undertaking that begins with paying attention, with becoming aware, with becoming more positive and uplifting.\u00a0 With awareness comes choice.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Here is one of my favorite exercises:\u00a0 Make a list of 20 things you love to do.\u00a0 Then, every day do at least one of them!\u00a0 If you are low, depressed, or depleted, do 5 or 10 of them.\u00a0 During the hardest period of my life, I had my list on the back of the bedroom door.\u00a0 Before I went to bed, I checked off what I had\u00a0 done; if I hadn\u2019t done my \u201chomework\u201d yet, I got to it\u2014read, danced, took a hot bath\u2026.\u00a0 This powerful exercise helped greatly then, and still does today.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

What is the best defense against low self esteem for those in an unhealthy environment?<\/strong>
\nThe first thing is to realize is that you have lots of choices!\u00a0 Develop inner and outer supports. Build more positivity into you life.\u00a0 Learn new skills\u2014self-esteem, assertiveness communication skills.\u00a0\u00a0 Develop inner strengths.\u00a0 Protect yourself and your children.\u00a0 Read my books. Take care of yourself and your children.\u00a0 Try to change the environment. Seek professional help.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

How can children garner high self esteem?<\/strong>
\nParents are in charge of the self-esteem of their children.\u00a0 My first book\u2014The Winning Family:\u00a0 Increasing Self-Esteem in Your Children and Yourself\u2014is packed with tips and tools focused on self-worth.<\/p>\n

To you, how does self esteem relate to beauty?\u00a0 <\/strong>
\nInner well-being and joy radiate to others as confidence and beauty.<\/p>\n

How did you come up with the Caterpillar to Butterfly analogy?\u00a0 <\/strong>
\nYears ago a friend commented:\u00a0 \u201cLouise, it seems as though humans have a reverse metamorphosis.\u00a0 We start out as beautiful butterflies, and then are turned into caterpillars.\u00a0 We spend the rest of our lives trying to remember and become the beautiful creatures we once were.\u201d\u00a0
\nThis observation was so powerful for me that I wrote about my personal metamorphosis from caterpillar-back-to-butterfly to help others who are on that journey of transformation.\u00a0<\/p>\n
