"shampoo

Traditional shampoos and conditioners that you find in big box stores are full of harmful chemicals and don’t actually do anything great for your hair. Granted, there are some wonderful natural shampoos on the market that are much better to use in your home than the bigger name brands but even those are not as natural as your hair routine can get. Your hair and scalp already produce enough natural oils to condition and keep your locks healthy. Using shampoos only upsets the natural balance that your hair and scalp has with one another.

I have always been hesitant about going without traditional shampoo, or no ‘poo, because of how long my hair is. It’s fascinating, though, the idea of going without shampoo so I am going to give myself a 30 day challenge. No shampoo, no conditioner and no other hair products. I am only going to use the simple and basic ingredients needed to go no ‘poo. I love using regular shampoo and conditioner, so this is definitely going to be a struggle!

The Basics

To begin you will need to gather 2 very simple ingredients: baking soda and apple cider vinegar. These 2 ingredients are already household staples when it comes to cleaning and other beauty routines. To begin, mix one part baking soda to three parts water. Just rub together to form a paste and apply to your scalp. After a few minutes, rinse thoroughly. I have found that I need a little less baking soda because my scalp tends to be on the dry side. Afterwards you will create an apple cider vinegar rinse. This is just one part apple cider vinegar to four parts water. Apply to your scalp and through your hair, then rinse.

Initial Thoughts

I had read that your hair may go through an oily phase while transitioning to a no ‘poo hair routine. I am definitely experiencing this. Luckily, I have to wear a head covering at work, so most of my days I don’t have to worry about the greasies. I can see how this stage of the game could affect a womans thoughts about continuing with the routine. I have also read, though, that you should stick it out! I’m only on Day 3, so I have yet to see how long this greasy phase actually lasts. I can already tell that the texture of my hair is a little different. After my hair dried from traditional washing and conditioning before, it always ended up flat and kinda straight. Now, I have noticed that it has a little more texture and bounce. I have waves that I didn’t have before, which I love.

I started this routine on May 1st and I would love for you to join me on this 30 Day No ‘Poo Challenge! Every Wednesday this month I will be giving updates, tips, and my general thoughts and feelings on going no ‘poo. It would be great if you could join in and give your own feedback, tips, tricks, and thoughts on this method. Have you gone no ‘poo before? What did you like and/or not like about the process? I would love to hear your thoughts and feelings as this 30 day challenge begins!
