""

I will admit that when I agreed to review this book I wondered if, as a beauty editor, it was straying too far from the topic. But self-esteem and beauty are fundamentally linked, so let’s explore that a little further.

Self-esteem is important to your well-being and your looks. That’s right…I said looks. When you feel good about yourself, you look good too. It is a fact. Confidence is the best kept beauty secret.

So what is different about this book? Dr. Louise Hart reveals no big secret or trick to unlocking your boundless self-esteem in On the Wings of Self Esteem. Rather she relates it to the metamorphosis of caterpillar to butterfly. While these types of analogies can border on hokey, I totally get where she is going with it.

Dr. Hart explains how humans go through a sort of reverse transformation where we are born beautiful, but because of life’s difficulties, become more down-trodden and negative over the course of our lives. What I love about this book is that it gives you an exercise a day to work on. These are exercises for the mind and are good for keeping us all grounded.

It is far too easy in this crazy-paced culture we live in to forget about the special things in life and focus too much on all of the stuff we have to do. One of my favorite exercises by Dr. Hart is to write a list of things you like to do most and do one each day. It is amazing how fulfilling it is to do something just for yourself that you simply want to do. Especially as mothers, we can get in the habit of putting everyone (and not just members of our own families) before ourselves. It is not selfish, but actually practical, to take care of yourself before you are all used up.

In the Preface Dr. Hart states that the National Association of Self-Esteem defines self-esteem as “the experience of being capable of meeting life’s challenges and being worthy of happiness.” That phrase is so simple and pleasing that it seems to garner higher self esteem all on its own.

Dr. Pratima Raichur in her book Absolute Beauty shares her thoughts on a healthy mind as related to beauty. This is one of my all time favorite books, and though there is much skin care, diet, and lifestyle advice in her book it pretty much all boils down to how healthy you are inside. As Dr. Pratima once told me, “Whatever you think, you become”.

No matter what stage you are inhabiting in life it never hurts to go back to the fundamentals, remember to take good care of yourself, and just think some simple and pleasant thoughts. On the Wings of Self Esteem is a quick read that offers practical advice on grounding yourself in this way.
