Easter is fast approaching and one of my fondest memories of Easter was searching the house high and low for my hidden basket. There was always little treats hidden in eggs and funny little toys I loved to play with. Baskets, plastic grass, and disposable plastic eggs certainly makes Easter a less than environmentally friendly holiday. This year, why not update the Easter baskets of the past and translate them into more eco-concious terms. Here is your guide to a simple and eco-friendly basket for the upcoming holiday.

1. The Basket

Shelves are lined with baskets in every color of the rainbow. These baskets are also, typically, made in China and out of wasteful materials. Peruse any number of thrift stores and you can easily find a cute and simple wicker basket to fill with goodies. You’re more than likely going to be able to find the exact same basket you see in stores now at your local thrift store. Instead of buying them new, buying used and recycling is always better. You can also think outside of the basket and use any sort of open container to fill. Plant pots, sand pails, and even thrifted bowls are just as nice to use.

2. The Grass

The plastic, un-recycleable green grass used to decorate the basket may look nice but in the end is just a waste. There are many alternatives to explore! You can easily grown your own Easter grasses for baskets. Make and Takes gives us some great directions on growing your own grasses inside egg cartons. Shredding newspaper or other pieces of scrap paper will not only lighten your recycling pile it will also make for a more interesting basket. Another simple and unique idea is to scour your thrift store, or your own craft stash, for green or different colored yarns. Un-wind or unravel them and fill your baskets. The yarn can easily be reused!

3. Egg Candy Containers

Shaking the little plastic eggs to hear the jellybeans and whoppers jingle about inside is one of the fun and surprising elements of Easter. It was fun not knowing what different candies your parents picked out for you! Unfortunately, those plastic eggs can’t be recycled and are more wasteful than they’re worth. Unless you have saved your eggs from Easters past, it may be best to explore new options. Over on Sew, Mama, Sew you can find instructions on crafting some secret fabric eggs. You won’t hear the jingle but the surprise will be just as nice. Why not have your kids find little containers, like mint tins or boxes, and have them decorate their very own candy containers.

The possibilities for an alternative Easter basket are endless. Only a few simple changes are needed to make this upcoming Easter holiday a little bit easier on the environment. You can easily keep the same traditions and update them for your eco way of life! What sort of steps are you taking to make Easter more eco-friendly? Do you have any other tips and tricks that you would like to share? I would love to read your ideas so feel free to leave any comments or links.
