February is the month of love and more chilly winter weather. Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and special date nights will be in store. Wether you’re sharing the evening with the one you love or winter hasn’t been kind to your pucker, maintaining the delicate skin on your lips is essential. Here are three, homemade ways you can get your pout soft and kissable.

1. Exfoliate

Cold temperatures and biting winds make for some seriously chapped lips this time of year. You need to slough off all the dry, dead skin on your lips so that your moisturizing efforts will soak in. You can easily create a simple scrub for your lips using this recipe from Beauty Secrets Revealed. Brown sugar would also be a delicious substitution for regular table sugar. Another easy way to exfoliate your lips is by gently scrubbing your lips in a circular motion with a moist toothbrush. This is always my final step before mouthwash!

2. Moisturize

Now that all of the dead skin has been exfoliated away, you need to moisturize to make sure that your lips stay nice and hydrated. Bleu Arts has a great how-to on creating a customized lip balm. I love using sweet almond oil as a lip moisturizing base and adding a tea tree essential oil for a cooling effect.

"beets"

3. Color

To top off your newly refreshed pucker, try some gorgeous homemade color. Torah Women gives us a recipe for a red lipstick using beets. You can easily add more or less of the beet juice to create your perfect shade of red. Try experimenting with other natural ingredients like rose petals. Grind red or pink roses until liquid begins to come out of them. Then apply the liquid to your lips like a stain. There are also natural flavoring oils you can add to your lipstick if you like. Southern Soapers has an interesting selection of flavors like maple!

Making your lips even more kissable is easy with homemade recipes and natural ingredients. What kind of products do you like to make or use on your lips to keep them soft and supple? Do you have any recipes that you use or follow? I would love to see some links and hear some of your ideas.
