Natural body care is a huge component of a vibrantly healthy life. There are so many nasty chemicals, fragrances, and questionable ingredients hiding out in traditional personal care products, and research shows that most of the stuff that’s in our home could be contributing to health issues.

We’ve written extensively about the problems with regular body care products, so rather than delving into it here, we’ll include a list of helpful references at the end of this post so that you can read up on this important topic if it’s new to you, or share with a friend who is not yet on the natural body care bandwagon.

But back to the good stuff! I’ve been using a rose hips and carrot seed oil for my face and I’m digging it. Generally, I have a pretty minimalist (and totally natural) routine. I use coconut oil (yep, the same one from your kitchen!) for my face and body, and for extra dry skin I use natural shea butter. Both of these are single-ingredient options that offer antioxidant protection for my nearly everyday sun exposure in our sunny state of Hawaii. Sometimes I make a natural skin scrub using coconut oil, sugar, and brown rice flour. I use a natural shampoo, Dr. Bronner’s soap and some natural body wash, and that’s it for body care.

But I was recently sent some products from SheaTerra and I’ve been really loving them and the fun ritual of making my routine just a bit fancier with the Rose Hips and Carrot Seed ‘Perfecting Serum.’ The dropper bottle is a bit weird to get accustomed to, but it’s fine now. The oil itself is almost dry, and it absorbs very quickly into the skin without the heaviness of coconut oil. The orange-colored oil has a pleasant earthy scent, and is not enhanced by any fragrances.

SheaTerra claims this is the perfect serum because of the synergy of these three powerful plant-based ingredients:

I’ve loved using this light, nourishing oil for the past few weeks. I can’t say that I’ve seen any miracles, but my skin does look really smooth and nice and feels really soft. I love the way that it blends into my skin so easily, and doesn’t leave a textural or scent residue. In one month I’ve only use about one-sixth of the bottle with twice-daily application, so there is still a lot left to keep my skin glowy and nice for months to come. At the time of writing the Serum is $29, which is a very reasonable price that I would be happy to continue to purchase once this bottle runs out.

But the best part is that SheaTerra makes good products, but they seem to be doing business just right too. The product line is free from animal-testing, gluten/soy, petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances or colors, mineral oil and basically everything else you’d want to avoid. Their products are wild harvested or naturally grown or mined. The whole product line is based on traditional African and Middle Eastern healing rituals like shea butter, rose water, marula oil, moringa and tamanu, among others. They focus their work on community-farmed ingredients that offer economic possibilities and hope for communities in Africa and beyond.

Founder Tammie Umbel created the company to provide sustainable opportunities for impoverished communities, and the company continues to source products from women’s cooperatives, wildlife conservation groups, non-profit community projects, and allots interest-free loans to women in marginalized regions. They also donate part of their profits to support preservation of the Vohibola Forest in Madagascar, the hippos of the Black Volta in Ghana, and other.

Check out this great oil on SheaTerra’s website and find the rest of their sustainable, awesome products.

Story of Cosmetics

Thanks to SheaTerra for sharing these beautiful products for review

Natural body care is a huge component of a vibrantly healthy life.
