A high end concealer may be able to work miracles, but you know what\u2019s even better at leaving you looking refreshed, revitalized, and full of mental vigor?\u00a0 A restful night\u2019s sleep.\u00a0 Of course, sometimes that is easier said than done.\u00a0 When life\u2019s stresses get in the way, it can be hard to get the long, rejuvenating sleep that your body needs.<\/p>\n

Try these tips to make your next night\u2019s sleep a peaceful one.<\/p>\n

Say no to the coffee mug & martini glass.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Avoid caffeine and alcohol.\u00a0 Having caffeine too late in the day can make your mind race when your body wants to be resting.\u00a0 Cut yourself off at least six hours before bedtime if not earlier.\u00a0 And while a cocktail may sound appealing for its relaxation qualities, it disrupts sleep patterns and inhibits restful REM sleep.\u00a0 Plus, once the alcohol wears off, you may find yourself waking up dehydrated.<\/p>\n

Say yes to the tea cup.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Have a cup of chamomile before bed.\u00a0 It\u2019s easy to find bagged chamomile in any tea section, but I\u2019m especially a fan of loose chamomile flowers, which can be purchased in the bulk tea section at natural grocery stores.\u00a0 Just fill a tea ball with the loose flowers and steep in warm water.\u00a0 Chamomile is known to have a calming and relaxing effect, and I\u2019ve noticed that a cup of chamomile before bed produces particularly detailed dreams.<\/p>\n

Say no to cuddling with your laptop in bed.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Avoid the bright lights of a computer or TV screen.\u00a0 Our brains are naturally wired to associate darkened rooms and low lighting as cues that sleep is approaching.\u00a0 Staring at a bright screen can prove to be too stimulating and hamper melatonin production.\u00a0 Stop reading your favorite blogs an hour or two before bedtime.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t avoid a nighttime scroll through your Facebook feed, at least turn down the brightness of the screen to a dim setting.<\/p>\n

Say yes to curling up with a good book.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Take time to read a calming, low-stress book or magazine, listen to soothing music, or meditate.\u00a0 (I\u2019ve found the meditation sleep podcasts<\/a> from Jesse and Jeane Stern to be particularly relaxing.)\u00a0 There are also lots of guided meditations available on YouTube.\u00a0 Do a bit of searching and find one that works for you.<\/p>\n

Say yes to getting your sweat on.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Work daily exercise<\/a> into your routine and reap even more benefits outside of cardiovascular health.\u00a0 Regular physical activity is equated with falling asleep faster and sleeping more deeply.<\/p>\n

Say no to a late night date with the treadmill.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t exercise too close to bedtime.\u00a0 For many people, exercise can have a stimulating effect, leaving you feeling awake and energized.\u00a0 Push your workout to earlier in the day if possible, so that you can put that energy to maximum use.<\/p>\n

Still having trouble falling asleep?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I love this insomnia-fighting trick from Katie Read, MFT<\/a>.\u00a0 If an overactive brain won\u2019t let you sleep, she recommends closing your eyes and trying this:<\/p>\n

“Make mundane lists that have nothing to do with your life.\u00a0 Insomnia is often caused by our brains racing all night with trivial, meaningless details and worries.\u00a0 Your brain is awake anyway, so take away the candy it likes and force it to think about something boring.\u00a0 Think of ten boys\u2019 names that start with ‘G.’ \u00a0Now ten girls\u2019 names that start with ‘H.’ \u00a0Now the capitals of five states.\u00a0 Now all the countries in South America.\u00a0 You get the idea.\u00a0 The specifics don\u2019t matter as much as the effort of re-focusing on something mundane and unrelated to your life.\u00a0 And watch!\u00a0 You might just drift off before you can think of even three boys\u2019 names that start with ‘Y.'”<\/p>\n
