While there are an increasing number of brands and designers offering ethical and sustainable style for adults, there are also a number of emerging brands that produce pint-sized ecofashion styles for babies and children. Even though it’s only July, August is just around the corner and it will be back to school time before we know it! I wanted to share a few ideas for parents who are looking to purchase with a purpose for their children as we head into the school season.

My new favourite organic, eco-friendly, Made in Canada brand is based in my city, Toronto. Mini Mioche was founded by owner Alyssa Kerbel, an inspired parent who wanted to provide sustainable childrenswear styles for parents. Her company produces well made, high quality childrenswear, “…the best line of organic baby basics”. Mini Mioche has two stores in Toronto and is also available for purchase online, shipping across Canada and to the US and international. The company supports ethical production, fair wages, organic and eco-friendly textiles and seeks to reduce their impact on the Canadian environment using low impact dyes and 100% recycled printed materials. Get shopping with Mini Mioche’s summer sale, offering 30% off select summer styles.

Dhana Ecokids

I had the honour of meeting the founder and visionary of Dhana Ecokids, Shamini Dhana last week at the Ethical Fashion Forum Source Summit. Shamini comes from a corporate background, and left the financial sector to launch an ecofashion label for children in the San Francisco Bay area. Dhana Ecokids premier collection included a partnership with Irish-born artist Elaine Murphy. She produced exclusive artist renditions including, “…soft elements from nature as well as delightfully creative depictions of alternative energy sources”. The company works with GOTS certified organic textiles, promotes fair and ethical manufacturing, cultural diversity, and artistic appreciation. Dhana Ecokids is proudly partnered with 1% For the Planet, to share the ‘Dhana spirit’ in communities around the world and protect the environment.

Parents who want to purchase clothing that is ethical, fair – with less impact on the environment- can be confident in these two brands and many more. There are great brands bringing high quality, ecofashion styles for infants and children. Check back next week for part two in this series to discover more designers who are carefully crafting clothes for kids, without compromise.
