Conventional – aka non-organic – cotton is full of problems. It takes tons of toxic pesticides to grow which pollute waterways and harm workers. It’s water-intensive. It’s usually genetically modified. But the thing that gets me the most about conventional cotton isn’t any of that. It’s that conventional cotton is basically soaked in blood.

Having read a lot of recent coverage of the FTC’s August 2009 ruling about bamboo, I wonder what will become of brands whose staple fabric is “bamboo”? The problem is, most of these designers and the textile sales reps they buy from, were sold rayon fabric labeled as bamboo. Rayon is a semi-synthetic fiber based on […]
Earlier this week I spoke with Jason and Jeff, co-founders of PACT, the most socially and environmentally responsible underwear company on earth, as far as I know. Not only do they use organic cotton, GOTS compliant dyes and otherwise uber-responsible manufacturing, they also donate 10% of sales to charities. This is utterly astounding in an […]
Sometimes it is not enough to get yourself looking gorgeous, your surroundings have to set the mood. As a self-professed candle junkie I can tell you that not any old candle fits the bill. Sure, they have to be clean burning and non-toxic, but let’s be real – the scent is what it’s all about. […]
When Eric Wilson launched Artevist last autumn, he knew the t-shirt market was saturated. “But on closer inspection”, he explains, “you soon realize that the vast majority are in the business of churning out the cheapest, often sweatshop, products possible.” But Artevist is a community of artists, not just another graphic tee company. There are […]
Did you know that 2009 has been declared the International Year of Natural Fibers by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization? Why is natural fiber so important? The natural fiber organizations help the income and the food security of poor farmers such as those working with jute in Bangladesh, cotton in some West African countries […]
Going green isn’t as difficult as it used to be with the array of vegetarian delights and eco-friendly products available on the market today, and environmentally-conscious clothing is becoming as popular as the fashions themselves. But M641 takes it one step further with a philosophical approach to designing clothes that are living, breathing representations of the spirit, […]
Okay, first of all I have to point out that while my colleague, Rodney Pate is a phenomenal photographer and artist, this may be his one and only flawed photo . . . I’m not svelt, but I swear I’m not that fat! But of course, it is really all about the bag . . . […]
Isn’t it nice to learn about a company that so admirably exceeds the goal of sales?
Hanky Panky is taking its ultra comfortable line eco-chic. Now, their lace trimmed undies (that can convert any thong phobic into a fan) come in all organic supima cotton. Fabulously stylish and shockingly comfy, it’s nice to have one of my favorite lines taking some of their products organic. I’ll hope for the day that […]
Since its inception in the autumn of 2005, Passenger Pigeon has become a green fashion favorite among women of all ages and financial means. Heather Schibli and Wendy Trass have created a company appreciated for its intelligent and passionate designs. The Canadian media mavens at GreenLivingOnline.com have allowed me to share my interview with Heather […]
I simply love this new recycled and reversible swimsuit out now by Victoria’s Secret. I’m really impressed with how the company is shaping up and evolving from their troubled past.A fresh start for them was making their catalog green a couple years ago (thanks to the amazing activists and the will inside the organization) thank […]
