Last year the FDA set new regulations on sunscreen safety. Rather than looking only at UVB protection, they focused on broad spectrum protection.
Broad spectrum sunscreens protect against both UVA and UVB rays. What the difference? UVB rays cause sunburn, UVA rays penetrate to deeper layers of skin and are responsible for longer term damage, like premature aging and skin cancer.
So, it is a good thing that FDA stepped up to the plate and set higher guidelines for sunscreens. This also meant that many sunscreens on the market no longer met broad spectrum requirements.
With summer fast approaching, how do we know which sunscreens to choose?
A few weeks ago Love True Natural sent me some samples of True Natural Sunscreens to try. Last year True Natural made the EWG Skin Deep Sunscreens of 2012 list as top rated sunscreens, and these new sunscreens meet the UVA requirements. They are all natural, nontoxic mineral sun protection that you are going to love.
How do I know? I’ve used them, on myself and my kids, and they don’t have any of the negatives of most mineral sunscreens. Sure, mineral is safer and provides better protection than chemical sunscreen. We all know that by now. The catch is; people will not use a sunscreen if they do not like it. And glaring white skin and a thick greasy coating turn most people off. Myself included.
You’ll be happy to know that the True Natural Sunscreens I tried are not sticky or greasy in any way. Plus, TN keeps the nasty whiteness to a minimum in their sunscreens with non-nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Right on!
The Specs:
Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Caribbean Coconut – This sunscreen may appear just the teensiest bit white when first applied but absorbs quickly. Read: you’ll look awesome and your new bathing suit won’t get ruined with white streaks. It is also very light and feels good on skin. The added bonus to this baby is the scent. Who doesn’t love to smell all coconut-y at the beach or pool? And no fragrance has been added, just the pure scent of real coconut. Sweet! This product is gluten-free, vegan, and cruelty-free.
Broad Spectrum SPF 30 for Baby & Family – When shopping for a sunscreen that suits the entire family you have to be choosy. This one does the job. It is water resistant, gentle on sensitive skin, and does not feel sticky once applied. It goes on a bit white-ish but is not a problem once you rub it in. No slippery babies or kids, and your car won’t get trashed with greasy white gunky either. This product is gluten- and cruelty-free. It is not vegan only because it contains beeswax to provide the water resistance, just so you know.
True Natural Sunscreens are the way to go in sun protection this year. Your search for your new favorite sunscreen is over. Now go outside and play!
