Sugar, Weight Gain + Your Hormones

It’s sort of a cliché that once women hit their 40s they gain about five extra pounds. That these extra lbs have managed to creep on gradually without a significant change in diet or exercise. And that those five extra are seemingly impossible to lose.

I’d heard this many times and always thought they must be doing something to cause it. Or that they looked fine so who cares about a few extra pounds.

Well, I’m here to tell you this 5 pound phenomenon is the real deal. I never thought it would happen to me, but now that it has I want it off. It may sounds like nothing but is something. This small gain has caused my clothes to fit differently and my energy levels to drop. It also sucks to eat right (mostly), exercise regularly and still not look the way you used to.

Dr. Christian Northrup advocates a healthy diet of whole foods and also recommends making sure to keep your blood sugar balanced. Out of whack blood sugar levels cause headache, low energy, scattered mind and can even lead to heart disease, diabetes and cancer. We’ve talked here before about low to no sugar diets and this information seems to be everywhere right now.

I’m thinking this blood sugar issue (and my sweet tooth habit) are to blame for hormonal fluctuations and my recent struggles with not only weight gain and energy drop, but irregular periods and monthly migraines.

So, I’ve enlisted some help from a nutritionist and will document my experience over the next 10 days. Hope you follow along.
