What are the regular parts of your sustainable beauty routine? I’m going to tell you about mine, and I’d love to hear about yours!
A couple of weeks ago, I was stumped on what to write in this space. We choose our own topics at Feelgood Style, and I was just drawing a blank! I decided to do a little bit of crowd-sourcing and posted this question to my Facebook wall:
Guysssss I need an article idea about sustainable fashion/beauty but also something in that area that I can talk about. Which is narrow, because my beauty routine consists of trying to remember to wash my hair twice a week. Suggestions? I am not kidding.
I got a ton of great suggestions, and I’m going to go through them all. The one that I wanted to hit on today, though, was something a couple of people asked about on that thread: what is your sustainable beauty routine? A lot of folks were taken with how infrequently I wash my hair, and I’ll get into that in another post.
My Sustainable Beauty Routine
Like that status suggests, what makes my beauty routine sustainable is that it’s very minimal.
Before I get into my routine though, I want to set one ground rule: this is not a spot for judgement. I’m putting that out there up front, because my routine is minimalist, and you might not approve. You might also think that I’m judging you for spending time and money on makeup or washing your hair more often than I do. I promise you that I’m not. What works for me may not work for you, and what works for you may not work for someone else. This is a judgement-free space.
Here’s my typical beauty routine:
Morning Routine – Wake up, brush teeth, smooth down bedhead, apply deodorant. Hopefully my one-year-old son is happy enough in his crib that I can sneak all three of these in before going to get him. Sometimes he crawls around on the bathroom floor while I do my morning routine. You’ll notice there’s no shower in there. Don’t judge!
Afternoon Routine – About twice a week, I sneak in an afternoon shower to wash my hair and face. I used to do no ‘poo, but lately I’ve been washing with Dr. Bronner’s castille soap. If I wash twice a week, my hair looks awesome, but (shh!) sometimes I only get to do this once a week. It really depends on my son’s nap schedule.
Evening Routine – We bathe my son in the tub every evening, and I bathe myself before he gets in. This lets me check the water temperature and sneak in daily grooming. I use the same castille soap on my body that I do on my hair. You’ll notice in the afternoon routine that I wash my face. I’ve experimented over the winter with just using water to wash my face. I wash my face with soap about twice a week, usually when I wash my hair unless it’s feeling greasy. It’s been working pretty well! After bathing my son, I put on deodorant before getting on with my evening.
That’s really it! This routine works really well with my schedule as a work-at-home mom. Next Monday, I’ll share a little bit more detail about my hair care routine. See you then!
