How to Make Deodorant with Custom Scents

How to Make Deodorant with Custom Scents

I’m a big believer that the best natural deodorant is one that you make yourself. Try this simple recipe for how to make deodorant!

Store-bought deodorant is the pits. Most conventional deodorants contain harmful ingredients like triclosan or triclocarban. Those chemicals do a good job at killing the bacteria that cause odor, but they also pollute our water and soil and even directly harm our health. Not really an even trade, in my opinion. Andrea at our sister site Green Living Ideas shared her homemade natural deodorant recipe, and I wanted to pass it along to you guys, too!

What I love about Andrea’s recipe is its simplicity and its versatility. She uses simple ingredients, and her process is one that anyone can follow. She also gives you options for several ingredients including how to make deodorant with whatever scents you like. Just by mixing up essential oils! Homemade, customizable, and healthy? Yes, please!

Ingredients

3 Tablespoons coconut oil
2 Tablespoons shea butter or cocoa butter
3 Tablespoons baking soda
2 Tablespoons arrowroot, cornstarch or potato starch
10-20 drops essential oil of your choice (best options: tea tree, lavender, cedarwood, geranium)

Directions

1. To a small mason jar or other small jar add coconut oil and shea butter (or cacao butter). Add jar to a small bowl of very hot water and let oil and butter melt together.

2. Once oil and butters are liquified, stir in remaining ingredients until well combined. Let cool completely.

3. To apply: use clean fingers and spread into armpit area until evenly distributed- and that’s it!

4. Experiment with your favorite essential oils here: any type will work, but things like peppermint, tea tree, clove and thyme have antibacterial and anti-fungal characteristics that might make your deodorant work even better!
