One of the jokes that a girlfriend of mine likes to make about running is that she’ll only run if she’s being chased. Well, what about if instead of just plain old running, you got to pound through mud and scramble over obstacles? Obstacle runs like the Spartan Race are about more than just fitness. They’re about fun!

I’ve been intrigued by obstacle racing since a few of my friends participated in one last summer, and the Spartan Race sounds like a super fun one! Instead of just running from the start to the finish line an obstacle race challenges you with fun challenges along the way to break up the monotony.

Depending on your fitness level, you can choose different distances, from 5k all the way up to a marathon-length race. You can run solo or team up with friends. Let’s be honest: when you’re playing in the mud, it’s more fun with friends, right?

The other cool thing about the Spartan Race is that you don’t just sign up and then train by your lonesome. When you sign up for their newsletter, they provide you with daily workouts and training tips for the 45 days leading up to your race. Pretty snazzy, right?
