Most get dry skin as winter approaches. But for those with more sensitive skin – redness, irritation and even breakouts come with it. I fall into this category and just stocked up on my winter skin care essentials.
The first thing we tend to pick up when combating dryness is a thicker moisturizer. While this is the obvious choice, and a vital part of cold weather skin care, we need to take a look at our overall routine. What type of product are you using to cleanse your face? When skin is dry and irritated go with a cleanser that is mild and soothing, like Weleda Almond Cleansing Lotion. And, unless you really need to, skip cleansing in the morning and either use warm water or a mild toner instead.
Now for that moisturizer. I swear by Weleda Almond Intensive Facial Cream for the chilly season. This rich, soothing cream not only deeply moisturizes skin but nourishes and protects from harsh weather. If it is a bit thick for your daytime needs, try using it at night and substituting Weleda Calendula Facial Cream for day.
Exfoliation is important in keeping skin feeling good and looking great year round. Just be sure not to over do it and never exfoliate irritated skin. Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Cream contains sweet almond meal to gently slough away dry, dead skin cells without stripping away moisture. Use twice weekly.
Brewed green tea makes a perfect toner this time of year. Pour a glass over ice, use a bit on a cotton pad on face and eyes and drink the rest. Soothing and refreshing without being at all harsh.
Lots of filtered water is always essential for happy hydrated skin. And adding flaxseed oil to your diet also helps to combat dryness.
When skin is upset the best rule of thumb is: Less is More. Add a few nurturing products to your regimen, be careful not to over-cleanse and (try to) get lots of rest and eat a healthy diet. Your skin will thank you.
