Thrift Store Savvy: Wearing Nothing New

How to Find Awesome Scores at the Thrift Store

I’m a big fan of thrift store shopping, and Like Jessi, almost everything I own is second hand. Here are some tips and tricks for developing a second hand wardrobe.

  •  Like she says in the video, “Confidence is key.” Grab what catches your eye, and rock it out.
  • Stay diligent. If you don’t find something this week, head back next week to see what’s new. Thrift stores and vintage shops restock their shelves all the time.
  • Get friendly. Talk to the staff, and find out when they get shipments. The best time to get new scores is on the day that the donations truck rolls in.
  • Come prepared. One of my favorite thrift stores doesn’t have a changing room. That can be a problem, since I’m not into taking off my jeans in public. When I hit this particular store, I make sure to wear a skirt and bring a friend. The friend can keep lookout while I very quickly try on garments underneath my skirt. All class, that’s me! But really, getting to know the quirks at your favorite store can go a long way.
  • Be flexible. Maybe you’re on the lookout for the perfect summer top today, but instead you run across some super cute skirts or an intriguing dress. Thrift shopping isn’t an exact science, so be ready to change your shopping list depending on what’s on the rack.
  • Thrift on vacation. Keep an eye out for thrift stores when you’re traveling. I’ve scored some of my favorite pieces while I was on the road.
  • Head to the ‘burbs. Urban thrift stores tend to be pretty picked over. Instead of heading to the same, tired Goodwill, pile into the car with some friends or hop on the train and head out to the suburbs. You won’t be sorry.
I’m sure there are some die-hard thrift store shoppers out there! Do you have any other tips or tricks for effective thrift store shopping? Share away in the comments!
