When you’re vegan, label reading isn’t just reserved for the grocery store. It continues to the clothing store, where shoes, coats, sweaters, and socks are inspected to avoid leather, wool, and silk. In the summer when breezy cotton is everywhere, it’s a bit easier than in the winter when cotton takes a backseat to heftier materials.
Vegans in cold climates still have to shovel snow and keep warm, and so what’s a person to do who wants the animals to keep their skin?
Here are my five cold weather closet essentials:
Boots for Leisure: For boots with an emphasis on fashion rather than function, my go-to sources are Alternative Outfitters and Moo Shoes. Alternative Outfitters is online only, while Moo Shoes has both online ordering and brick and mortar stores in New York City and Los Angeles. I recently purchased these military-style boots (above) from Alternative Outfitters, and I’ve been wearing them non-stop.
Snow Shoes: It’s a sad truth that the time of year when you’re forced to be outside for hours shoveling is also the time of year when you’d most like to stay inside with a hot mug of cocoa instead. Alas, the driveway won’t clear itself. So for boots that keep me warm and dry and have good traction on slick surfaces, I like these Cumberland boots by Sorel.
Warm Socks: So many thick winter socks are made with wool. Even when wool is off the table, oftentimes socks are made with synthetic materials that irritate my feet. That’s why I like these organic cotton socks from Maggie’s. They are thick and wear well. Plus, they come in a variety of colors.
Everyday Purse: My favorite purse of the moment is this bag by Shiraleah. I love the true green shade that’s great for fall or winter, and the interior pocket placement is just the right size for keeping track of my cellphone. The bag is not only cute but also durable; plus, I get compliments on it all the time.
Winter Coat: I’ve written before about my love for coats by Vaute Couture. For staying warm while also flattering the figure, nothing beats them. Every year they come out with new styles and colors. My favorite from this year? This red number that reminds me of what Little Red Riding Hood would wear on a catwalk.
