Smudge-free Eyeliner

While some days I am actually going for the smudged look, there are definitely times when you do not want your eyeliner to smear.  Here is how to go about getting it to stay put.

Don’t skip the moisturizer.  Whether you use a gel, cream or oil to moisturize the skin around your eyes, do not skip this important step in treating this delicate skin.  Using a hydrating product around eyes will keep skin from becoming flaky and dry, and will also help to keep fine lines at bay.  Just remember to keep any eye moisturizer an inch away from the lash line.

A little powder goes a long way.  Too much facial powder makes skin look dry and wrinkly, and no one wants that.  A light dusting of a sheer and slightly moisturizing facial powder will help to set makeup and keep eyeliner in place.  Jurlique Citrus Silk Finishing Powder is my favorite for its light-as-air feel and slightly sparkling quality.  Smells good too, and lasts a super long time.

Pencil or liquid?  I love pencil eyeliners for their creamy, easy to apply quality.  Apply a thick line, winging up slightly at the outer corner, and smudge just slightly for a natural effect.  For long-lasting hold, apply a swipe of liquid liner and then apply pencil over the top after it dries.  The best and easiest way to apply liquid liner is to let the heel of your hand rest on your cheek and use one fluid stroke.  The liquid liner will give the pencil a nice base and add depth.

Apply eye shadow after eyeliner.  I always used to apply my eye shadow first, but the shadow helps to set the eyeliner.  If you are using dark shadow, another layer of liner can be applied over the shadow.
