Avon CEO Gets Clinton Initiative Award :: Deserved or Controversial?

Jung was the recipient of the award for her global efforts empowering women against poverty, violence and more, and for having raised more than $725 million toward breast cancer research. She presides over the worlds largest corporate philanthropy fund for women and is actively involved in global partnerships that keep women safe; and she’s head of a company that now employs more than 42,000 people

The irony?

Avon products still contain what are known to be harmful chemicals in their products, including endocrine disruptors, suspected carcinogens, irritants and synthetics. As an organization that is working so hard on behalf of women to help fight breast cancer and womens health issues in general, how is it possible that there is still such a disconnect between what they produce, and the very issues they’re trying to eliminate? There are millions and millions of women using Avon products daily, yet how many are aware that the products may be causing more harm than good.

I’m not criticizing the enormous effort that Jung has made, just making a case that perhaps some of that $725 million would be better spent cleaning up their act across the board, not just where it makes them look good.
