Video: “Wholeness” - the definition of Yoga and more…

Recently I wrote about inspirational Yoga Wisom.  Now I’m tuning in again for this video which talks about the philosophy of wholeness, and defines all types of yoga.

Found on the Yoga Channel in StumbleUpon! StumbleUpon is fun and sometimes inspirational source for gems on the web. I find both the buddhism and yoga channels to be a serendipitous source of ancient wisdom.

When you have time, please check SU out and sign up, we’d love to discover your FGS stumbles :)

Namaste…

Yoga Wisdom

0811863581_norm.jpgLately I’ve been reading Liz Lark’s 1,001 Pearls of Yoga Wisdom ~ Take your Practice Beyond the Mat. In fact, today as I picked up the book for a burst of inspiration I came across this Ralph Waldo Emerson quote:

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment”

And as I was reading this in the morning over tea, blackberries, honey and toast, life became miraculously better with another burst of yogi wisdom in my cup of Yogi Tea with a charming quote on the teabag tag reading:

“The purpose of life is to enjoy every moment.”

Indeed we try! Read the rest of this entry »

Non-Toxic, Do-It-Yourself Cleaning Made Simple

Eco-Me Home Cleaning KitThe “green” cleaning products on the market are great, but they can be pricey. You know you should mix all your own house cleaning solutions, but it can be a hassle, and who knows if you’re using the right ingredients in the proper amounts? Finally, we found an easy way to make all the healthy “green” home cleaning products you need, all in one handy kit.

With the Eco-Me Home Kit, you provide the white vinegar, baking soda, olive oil, and water, and you’ve got everything you need to make an all-purpose cleaner, a wood polish cleanser, and a scrub cleanser, too — at a fraction of the cost of most store-bought non-toxic cleaners.

The Eco-Me Home Kit contains:
2 spray bottles for mixing spray cleaner and polish
1 jar for mixing scrub cleanser
1 natural bristle scrub brush
1 handy mixer
1 microfiber cleaning cloth
1 bottle Eco-Me Home Cleaning Essential Oil
1 natural fiber storage bag
Easy to follow instructions on how to mix ingredients (right from your own kitchen).

The essential oil contains tea tree, lemongrass, rosemary, and lavender pure plant oils, and helps purge surfaces of mold, mildew, grime, and water stains (plus it smells great!). The kit is available at eZoetic.com for $26.00, and you’ll also find an Eco-Me Baby Kit, Eco-Me Cat Kit, and Eco-Me Dog Kit there, too. Now it’s easier than ever to “green-it-yourself!”

Rescue Remedy

rere.jpgHave you heard of Rescue Remedy?

Well, they say it is Yoga in a Bottle and many a holistic health practitioner will tell you the same. I like the idea of flower essences formulated to rescue someone all tied up in knots. The remedy claims to have “become every woman’s emotional ally for its calming and centering energy and is now relied upon by people around the world to provide unconditional support during demanding times.”

The site graciously offers tips on how to unwind in a bind with what they call: Cool, Calm and Relaxed: Read the rest of this entry »

Healer Byron Katie

byronkatie.jpgThe work of Byron Katie is brilliant! She has been tagged by the 11th Hour Action network as an expert on their list of gurus. Her mission is to end human (mental) suffering.

Byron has posted a number of talks to her site called The Work which  “is a simple yet powerful process of inquiry that teaches you to identify and question thoughts that cause all the suffering in the world. It’s a way to understand what’s hurting you, and to address your problems with clarity”

The Work begins with a four step worksheet: Read the rest of this entry »

CLEAN WATER IS LIFE

HAPPY EARTH DAY from AVEDA 2008 EARTH MONTH: CLEAN WATER IS LIFE

cleanwaterislife.jpg

Aveda Seeks to Raise $2.3 Million this month for Clean Water Rights Globally. Aveda’s fundraising goal for 2008 is to raise this amount or more during the month of April for global and local organizations working to support and preserve clean water. Last year they raised well above the goal and we are hoping it happens again!

Specifically the Aveda Clean Water Is Life targeted plans are:

  • a project in Brazil focused  on an effort to aid in the development of sustainable water systems, medicinal gardens and natural healing education, and the prevention of illegal fishing and logging on indigenous lands.
  • work in Bulgaria to train and provide resources for local farmers in to convert to organic farming.
  • efforts in India for the building of sustainable water systems in nine villages, where youth will be trained in hand pump wells.
  • help in South Africa to help protect local communities from high levels of uranium discharge in drinking water supply from a mine upstream.

Aveda is proud to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility as this campaign  continues for clean water in an effort to make a sustainable positive impact on our planet through the organization. For the second year now, Aveda has joined together with Global Greengrants Fund as their global Earth Month partner. The GGF is to provide grants for community-based water projects around the world. These efforts highlight a special focus on regions where Aveda sources ingredients, Read the rest of this entry »

Healing Houseplants

moon-and-moth-orchids-phalaenopsis.jpgPlacing a phalaenopsis orchid (shown here) removes toxic xylene from the air which comes from the electrical equipment around you including TVs and computer monitors. UK based Style Wll Save Us (SWSU) has a great book review out on this topic called Eco-friendly Houseplants - 50 Indoor Plants That Purify the Air in Houses and Offices

I discovered the peace lily absorbs alcohol, acetone, trichloroethylene, benzene and formaldehyde. The lilies are also known to help reduce allergies. No wonder I’ve seen them as ‘get well soon’ arrangements in hospital gift shops.  Indoor gardening brings oxygen, beauty, and joy and removes toxic icky particles from the air.

So where do these problems in the air start? Well, trichloroethylene is released in printers. Formaldehyde is traced back to gas cookers, upholstery, wood stains, curtains, floor coverings, varnishes and ceiling tiles.  Acetone is in many cosmetics. Benzene is common in carpets, paints, varnishes, adhesives and wallcoverings and alcohol is present in perfumes and mouth wash. The houseplants reviewed purify the air better than any expensive air purifier by absorbing the bad air and sending out oxygen to heal and invigorate.

I was eager to test this fact so I went to look at Read the rest of this entry »

There Will be Blood

Editor’s note: As a user of the Diva Cup for the past two years, I’m excited to share this guest post by Juliana Tran, a student in Professor Simran Sethi’s “Media and the Environment” course at the University of Kansas. It was originally published to the course blog on March 11, 2008.

divacup.jpgEvery month it comes and goes, effecting women (and those around them) in their personal health, hormonally, emotionally and on a broader scale, in their environment.

Yes, I am talking about menstruation.

Menstruation is an issue that does pertain to both men and women. There is not an issue of menstruation itself, something that I feel should be celebrated, and not something taboo, uncomfortable, and feared. Unfortunately, there is an issue with the toxicity and disposability of the way women “take care of this problem”.

So, how is it relevant to men? If you have a women in your life, mother, sister, daughter, significant other, show them you care about their personal health by telling them about the consequences of using disposable products!

Personal Hygiene: Feel Fresh with Lush

lushfrshness1.jpgLUSH makes the freshest natural deodorants! They work naturally with your body. Many years ago I stopped using the conventional deodorants like Secret and Sure because of the toxic aluminum that may be linked to Alzheimer’s. Aubrey Organics has a good overview on this topic and decent product also. The toxics in most b.o. fighters are aluminum chlorohydrate or aluminum chlorohydroxide that plug underarm pores to provide so called “protection” while really it is very possible they are leading to dangerous neurological damage. Our body’s are designed to sweat through our skin, it is the largest organ we have! The skin is one of the main channels to the interior of our bodies, it works though through absorption, and the underarms are major receptive sites for absorbing chemicals. The deadly links to the synthetic deodorant industry are serious. Scientific studies are still in the works. The magic of Lush is that the products actually work naturally with sweating and amazingly activate perspiration into a lovely scented essence. This is a miracle for those of us who Read the rest of this entry »
