Weeks back we discussed the delightful scents and overall loveliness of Lush’s deos. And how could I possibly have forgotten to post on one of my favorite shampoos! I am singing in the shower these lyrics:
I o-la-la-la-la-la love luscious Lush “lemon-lime margarita shampoo adds shine and body to fine hair… It’s this saucy, sassy, salty shampoo! BIG combines shine-enhancing citrus juices with the beautifying, hair-buffing impact of sea salt and genuine sea water for a body-building regimen your fine hair won’t sweat over. Good things can come in small packages, but for body-boosting boom..”
Now I have friends overseas calling me for this stuff. As if they don’t already deliver everywhere on earth almost! I must say this is the most amazing shampoo anyone has ever tipped me on, and now, my dears, I must pass this tip along to you as it is almost too good to be true.

There’s a great new book on the shelves by award-winning author Renée Loux: Easy Green Living. Loux, who penned Living Cuisine and the Gourmand Award-winning The Balanced Plate, is a celebrated raw foods chef and host of the TV show “Easy Being Green.”
In her new book, Loux applies her whole-foods philosophy to our homes, gardens, and beauty routines, including lots of “5 Step” lists which make it easy to implement changes easily. Without being condescending or preachy, Loux conveys her philosophy about what it really means to live a “green” life, and how each little change we make contributes to a higher quality of life in every aspect. It’s inspiring as well as instructive.
The 416-page book is available at Amazon.com and you can read more from (and about) Renee Loux at her website, reneeloux.com.

Red Flower is an inspirational natural beauty care company that believes the tradition of bathing is deeply connected to nature. I’ve become quite intrigued with their blend selections and cleansing rituals. In a recent interview I asked:
1. What does the word “sustainability” mean to red flower? We all have different definitions, and honor and appreciate those organizations such as yours that are moving into a holistic healing approach to working and living. To Red Flower “Sustainability” means:
- sustainable sourcing locally.
- working with the lumber industry to use otherwise wasted material.
- producing at 100 percent wind powered plant.
- to use soy based inks, to use recycled and recyclable packages.
- to conserve water and energy.
- to meet the criteria of bio dynamic, bio compatible and bio degradable.
- to create petrochemical free, dye sulfate and paraben free products.
- to use whole essential oils and natural certified organic ingredients.
- to educate and learn.
- to stay on an ever evolving path.
- to consider the lifecycle of every product. Read the rest of this entry »

Editor’s note: OK, most of the posts here at Feelgood Style are directed at women, but the guys like to look good, too (well, occasionally). This week, our friends at Life Goggles found a great product for the well-groomed greenie: a solar-powered electric shaver. This post was originally published on Monday, April 21st, 2008.
I like the idea of a solar shaver, available from Nigel’s Eco Store. It’s clearly designed for traveling with a nice picture of an airplane on it. Leave it out in the sun for a few hours (or days if you forget about it like me), and it’s fully powered for your, er, shaving needs.
I use a razor usually and found changing to a shaver a little difficult. For a start this one just didn’t get that close: it was an effort to get a clean shave. I could have shaved my whole face by the time I had done one cheek with this. I’m not sure whether it was this shaver or electric ones in general. It is pretty handy, though: it’s small enough not to be cumbersome, either when carrying around or using. The only problem was when it ran out of juice (it lasts surprisingly long), you then have to put it in the sun for a while to recharge it. With half a shaved face.
With an integrated cleaning brush in the cap, the solar shaver is available from Nigel’s Eco Store for £29.99 (about $60 US).
And don’t forget: Life Goggles’ “Great Green Giveaway” contest ends on Wednesday!

HAPPY EARTH DAY from AVEDA 2008 EARTH MONTH: CLEAN WATER IS LIFE

Aveda Seeks to Raise $2.3 Million this month for Clean Water Rights Globally. Aveda’s fundraising goal for 2008 is to raise this amount or more during the month of April for global and local organizations working to support and preserve clean water. Last year they raised well above the goal and we are hoping it happens again!
Specifically the Aveda Clean Water Is Life targeted plans are:
- a project in Brazil focused on an effort to aid in the development of sustainable water systems, medicinal gardens and natural healing education, and the prevention of illegal fishing and logging on indigenous lands.
- work in Bulgaria to train and provide resources for local farmers in to convert to organic farming.
- efforts in India for the building of sustainable water systems in nine villages, where youth will be trained in hand pump wells.
- help in South Africa to help protect local communities from high levels of uranium discharge in drinking water supply from a mine upstream.
Aveda is proud to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility as this campaign continues for clean water in an effort to make a sustainable positive impact on our planet through the organization. For the second year now, Aveda has joined together with Global Greengrants Fund as their global Earth Month partner. The GGF is to provide grants for community-based water projects around the world. These efforts highlight a special focus on regions where Aveda sources ingredients, Read the rest of this entry »

Editor’s note: Normally, we publish our weekly post from Life Goggles on sustainablog, but today’s product review definitely belongs here at Feelgood Style. Life Goggler Adam takes asks his friend Claire to use and review UK-based Beyond Organic’s Hydrating Body Oil. This post was originally published on Friday, April 20, 2008.
Following on our look at some of the Beyond Organic Skincare products is the Hydrating Body Oil. Part of their Sensual Massage Gift Pack which costs £29.92, it can also be bought separately for £14.50.
Once again I roped in Claire (who looked at the Firming Eye Cream) and asked her about this 60ml bottle of body oil which contains a host of ‘good for you’ ingredients such as horse chestnut, fennel, cornflower, green tea, sea buckthorn and macadamia nut.

LUSH makes the freshest natural deodorants! They work naturally with your body. Many years ago I stopped using the conventional deodorants like Secret and Sure because of the toxic aluminum that may be linked to Alzheimer’s. Aubrey Organics has a good overview on this topic and decent product also. The toxics in most b.o. fighters are aluminum chlorohydrate or aluminum chlorohydroxide that plug underarm pores to provide so called “protection” while really it is very possible they are leading to dangerous neurological damage. Our body’s are designed to sweat through our skin, it is the largest organ we have! The skin is one of the main channels to the interior of our bodies, it works though through absorption, and the underarms are major receptive sites for absorbing chemicals. The deadly links to the synthetic deodorant industry are serious. Scientific studies are still in the works. The magic of Lush is that the products actually work naturally with sweating and amazingly activate perspiration into a lovely scented essence. This is a miracle for those of us who Read the rest of this entry »

Previously, on FGS we talked about the possible choices for ladies to buy organic intimates. Which who knows? May just move you to a luxe-lingerie dance party tonight. Right now Grist has a great article out on greening the underwear drawer and it includes briefs for men. As a resource they feature Red Dog eco sport. Looks like a good choice for the guys! The styles are simple and all organic, and they have a solid mission:
Red Dog products are made in Turkey from SKAL certified organic cotton (exclusive of trim). Low impact, eco-friendly dyes were used to achieve product color. RDS encourages organic farming and eco-friendly, sustainable living. By providing farmers with tools to improve their skills, and thus the quality of their cotton, we hope to increase their opportunities for self-sufficiency and sustainability. We only work with manufacturers that believe in our principles. All workers must be paid a living wage and no unfair labor practices or unsafe working conditions can exist. Your support enables us to educate consumers on the benefits of recycling and renewing the earth’s natural resources.

The average square inch of skin holds 650 sweat glands, 20 blood vessels and more than a thousand nerve endings. It eliminates toxins, protects, controls moisture loss, regulates heat, acts as a storage system, is responsible for sensation, and absorbs oxygen, nitrogen & carbon dioxide. It lives and breathes. It’s a constantly shifting playing field according to external & internal influences and under constant siege. Add to this the fluctuating seasons and climate change, and you start to get some idea of how skin alters from one season to the next.
You know how it goes… that moisturizer you love in Autumn/Winter is too heavy for Spring/Summer. What you love in the hotter months is all wrong for the drier, colder seasons. Listen up, your skin is trying to tell you something! The seasons change, so should your beauty routine.
There are several companies that offer light/heavy versions of pretty much the same thing so you don’t have to switch brands to update your skincare. Legendary Dr Hauscka Rose Cream has a lightweight version, Pomega5 just launched Revitalizing Essential Moisture, an option to their phenomenal Healing Cream, Kimberly Sayer have an Ultra Light Daily Moisture SPF25 (great for spring/summer) and Antioxidant Day Cream SPF25 which is a little heavier. Perianne is another line that takes the changing of the seasons seriously. Their entire company & product selection is divided into Fall/Winter, Spring/Summer and they even have a transitional collection for in between.
