NYFW Fails to Put Sustainable Fashion in the Spotlight

NYFW

Green is definitely the new black, with everything from food to cars to beauty products taking a turn for the clean. Too bad NYFW didn’t get the memo.

Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week is to fashion what the Oscar’s are to cinema. Designers, movie stars, publishers, journalists, and fashion insiders gather in the Big Apple to watch the most super of the super models parade down the runway in the latest creations.

Yet the uber-cool event is missing something. And that would be a spotlight on sustainable fashion.

Unfortunately, NYFW seemed to fail where sustainability is concerned. David Dietz, founder of Modavanti, online high-end sustainable fashion retailer, tells it like it unfortunately is.

It’s not just about green being popular. The clothing industry is responsible for much of the world’s pollution. NYFW could go a long way in raising awareness and promoting cleaner clothing production.

Efforts have been made. Livia Firth and Stella McCartney are proponents of eco fashion, and then there are The Green Shows. But is mainstream fashion taking note? Sustainability has a more upfront spot in international fashion shows. It took a while for organic beauty to become more widely recognized in the US. Maybe the fashion industry will eventually come around too.

Sure, NYFW is not only about the fashion. It’s also a who-went-to-what festival of celeb fun. And let’s face it, stars sell. There were some celebrities who put their hat in the sustainable fashion ring. Still, In the future it would be enlightening to see real designers showing off their latest innovations in the spotlight and push the Kanye-esque collabs to the side.
