Watch Emma Watson Make a Case for Male Feminism

Emma Watson UN HeForShe Talk

Emma Watson spoke at the United Nations last week on behalf of the HeForShe campaign, inviting men to embrace feminism alongside the ladies.

If you’re a reader here, chances are you don’t consider male feminism to be a big deal, right? Of course men can support equal rights, equal pay, and equal treatment for all women! But our society still has a definition of manliness that often seems at odds with the basic goals of feminism.

In the video below, Emma Watson speaks to the UN about male feminism:

Watson’s talk reminded me a bit of a piece that my friend Justin recently wrote over at Eat Drink Better about vegan masculinity. Like the feminist movement, the vegan movement may not seem like it has space for masculinity, but that depends on what you consider “manly.”  And whether being “manly” is even something men need to worry about. In his piece, Justin doesn’t call for redefining manliness. He asks why we need to divide our culture into masculine and feminine in the first place. It’s a great read!

The feminist movement has come a long way, but we also have a ways to go. Most women still don’t earn equal pay for equal work, and we certainly receive different treatment than men in a lot of places.

When celebrities like Emma Watson start speaking up on behalf of women, their message has a further reach then you or I speak up. I’m not saying that we should be silent, of course! Just that Watson’s UN speech has the potential to do a lot of good for women – and men! – everywhere.
