DIY Dorm Decor Makes Your Room Your Own

DIY Dorm Decor Makes Your Room Your Own

That’s funny, you thought DIY meant do-it-yourself.  Psh… amateurs. For college students, this acronym is simple. DIY = Dorm is Yours! Let’s create some simple, cute, DIY dorm decor!

A dorm room is nothing less than a new home, and it is all yours! DIY projects may be the easiest way to personalize without breaking the bank. Check out these three simple DIY dorm decor projects that I put together for my dorm room!

3 DIY Dorm Decor Projects

1. Organization Station to Keep You Up to Date

What you’ll need: an old picture frame, pens/markers/crayons, sticky notes or paper

Step 1: Find a picture frame that matches your color scheme (I found this turquoise one at a thrift store)

Step 2: Take out the old picture and replace it with a slab of white cardboard. If the picture doesn’t come out, simply cover it with whatever material you would like!

Step 3: Decorate the cardboard/newspaper/butcher paper/fabric. You can use the entire board as a calendar grid, or split it into sections.

*I put some little note papers on the side to jot down anything that’s on my (or one of my friends’) mind.

Step 4: Invest in some white board markers. Fun fact: they will wash off glass the same way they do white boards (just make sure not to leave it on for too long!)

2. Custom Throw Pillows to Keep You Comfy

What you’ll need: an old throw pillow (or other stuffing), material to upholster, sewing materials

Step 1: Measure out two rectangles of fabric that would fit the size of your new pillow. If you are covering old pillows, make sure to leave extra space on the outside.

Step 2: Pin the fabrics together and turn inside out. Sew three sides and a little chunk on both ends of the fourth side, leaving an opening big enough to put your pillow/stuffing in.

Step 3: Turn the fabric right side out and stuff up that baby!

Step 4: Sew up that little space (easiest by hand if your  machine can’t take it!)

3. Decorative Garland to Keep You Happy

What you’ll need: command hooks, some type of ribbon/rope, clothespins

Step 1 (and only): Hang or tie the rope/string/ribbon to the command hooks to secure and clip the clothes pins on… Wala!
