All women experience out of whack hormones at some point. Headaches, fatigue, fuzzy brain, muffin top…all of these can be symptoms of hormonal imbalance.
As in other areas, we tend to medicate our hormonal symptoms rather than treat the underlying cause. Why not at least try to bring our bodies into balance naturally before adding more chemicals to the mix.
This week Kris Carr interviewed Dr. Sara Gottfried on the subject of hormonal imbalance. Dr. Gottfried is a Harvard educated gynecologist, yoga teacher, mother, and advocate for women’s health. Her plan is more holistically focused, using foods and lifestyle to reduce stress and inflammation, restoring balance and health.
I love this way of thinking. At my annual check up this year I talked with the nurse practitioner about hormones and a few things that have changed for me. She, not surprisingly, suggested I take a birth control pill to help with these minor issues. And she’s not the only one. I’ve spoken with so many women around my age (mid 40s) that have been put back on The Pill.
And you know what? I tried it, against my better judgment. The result? My symptoms were worse and I was so tired I couldn’t function normally. I ditched the pills after only a week and a half.
That’s not to say there aren’t times when medication is appropriate. If you benefit from being on hormone altering medications and your life is better for it, by all means do it. But I feel there are better options for those of us who need a different approach.
As with most healthy eating plans, Gottfried prescribes (basically) a vegan diet. It seems everything you read these days on eating to prevent health issues, from cancer to balancing metabolism, boils down to eating vegan.
My take away here is that fruits and veggies are the healthiest foods on this planet. But eat what you love. And if what you love is unhealthy, eat that in moderation. We all know that refined flour/sugar is bad for us. I’ve also found that going drastic does not work for most people. I think we have to get ok with having less, rather than doing without.
