DIY Fashion: 15 Ways to Update Your Shoes

DIY Fashion: 15 Ways to Update Your Shoes

Updating your shoes is super fun and easy with the help of these 15 DIY fashion projects!

Now that spring cleaning is in full swing, it’s time to think about updating and repurposing items that we would otherwise get rid of. Before you send all of your old shoes to the local thrift store, check out these 15 DIY fashion projects! You can clean your shoes, and then revamp and reinvent them into something incredible!

1. Paint the top of your shoes with a bright color

Sarah at While They Snooze simply painted the top part of an old pair of flats with a bright lime green paint! Now her shoes make a statement and are perfect for spring!

2. Update canvas shoes with a dip dye treatment

Are your canvas shoes looking pitiful? Give them a makeover with a fun dip dye treatment! Instead of using a fabric dye, try making your own natural non-toxic dye or make natural fabric dye with turmeric.

3. Makeover a pair of shoes with Mod Podge and fabric

Grab an eco-friendly fabric (like undyed hemp or organic cotton) and Mod Podge to take your shoes from drab to fab!

4. Add lace to your favorite pumps

Are your favorite pumps just too plain? Bobbi at How Does She simply added pretty vintage lace! I love the way the lace adds a vintage flair to her modern pumps.

5. Redo a pair of shoes with patterned duck tape

This is proof: duck tape really does fix everything — even boring shoes! Megan from Brassy Apple revamped her old heels with patterned duck tape that is oh-so-adorable!

6. Make your own comic book flats

Obsessed with comic books? This is the perfect DIY fashion project for your shoes!

7. DIY cat toe shoes

I just can’t get over how adorable these DIY cat toe shoes from Kittenhood are. I’d probably end up looking down at my feet all day!

8. Turn vintage costume jewelry into shoe clips

I love using vintage costume jewelry for DIY recycled jewelry projects, but never thought about using them on plain shoes. Grab some old jewelry and shoe clip blanks, and you’re ready to go!

9. Add vintage buttons to your shoes

If you collect buttons like I do, these shoes with vintage buttons will make your heart smile! Simply sew vintage buttons onto your shoes and you have a one-of-a-kind pair of shoes. If you don’t have any vintage buttons on hand, you can make your own buttons from recycled materials, too.

10. DIY glitter shoes tutorial

When in doubt add glitter, right? Give your shoes some sparkle with glitter and Mod Podge!

11. Paint the heels of your shoes a neon color

If you like the look of your shoes, but just want to add a punch of color, paint the heels! The bright, neon colors that Love Maegan added are fabulous!

12. DIY scarf flats

Add an adorable bow to your average flats with vintage or thrifted scarves!

13. Make a rosette from a reclaimed t-shirt and then sew it onto your shoes

T-shirt rosettes are so easy to make, but will have a huge impact on your shoes! You can just add one rosette, or add a couple of small rosettes in different colors.

14. Paint your old sandals

Are your sandals looking a little rough? Paint them like Kaysi did from Keeping it Simple!

15. Redo a pair of flip flops with braided t-shirt straps

Another project to add to the list of incredible t-shirt craft projects: braided t-shirt sandals! I can only imagine how comfortable these would be because of the softness of the t-shirts.
