You might remember Lauren Conrad from her reality television debut on The Hills, but this past fall she launched The Little Market, an online artisanal marketplace. The Little Market sources and sells handmade artisanal goods, partnering with artisans in Bolivia, India, Mexico, Nepal, Peru and Tunisia. Conrad is working with her best friend, Hannah Skvarla, who has travelled extensively in developing countries and partnered with organization’s such as Human Right’s Watch. They hope to “… combat poverty, empower communities and create social justice” by establishing sustainable partnerships with artisans around the world. They work with Global Goods Partners to ensure that fair trade principles guide The Little Market’s ethos and operations. They sell ceramics, glassware, scarves, knit baby wear and vintage-inspired trunks.

Conrad’s pursuit of a conscious consumption initiative is part of a broader trend among celebrities to support ethical and sustainable lifestyle. From Revenge star, Amber Valletta’s work with Master and Muse promoting eco-fashion, to Olivia Wilde’s Conscious Commerce platform, celebrities are using their considerable powers of persuasion to convince us to  purchase with a purpose. Time will tell how impactful their influence will be on consumer culture. Do you follow celebrity style? Have you discovered ethical and sustainable lifestyle through a celebrity endorsement?
