People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)
As if I needed another reason to love Urban Outfitters (unique jewelry for 10 bucks, amirite?), now the mecca for fashionistas who are more Greenwich Village than Fifth Avenue just got greener. The company’s just-launched new label, Della, features clothing and accessories made entirely from sustainable vegan materials. And each piece is handmade by underprivileged women in Ghana, who benefit by receiving skills training, access to education, and a living wage.
Using sustainable vegan materials not only protects the environment but also prevents cruelty to animals. A PETA undercover investigation into the leather industry showed that cows and other animals who are killed for their skins have their throats cut and are often skinned and dismembered while they’re still conscious. I don’t know about you, but nothing about the phrase “skinned and dismembered while still conscious” makes me want to sling a leather bag across my body. And don’t even get me started on fur. Animals—even dogs and cats—being skinned alive? Um, no thanks.
Compassionistas should check out the new UO line and watch for the company to expand it with even more Dellaightful style.
