DIY Beauty: DIY Shampoo Recipes for Gorgeous Hair

DIY Shampoo Recipes

You don’t need to spend a lot of money on shampoo to have gorgeous hair! Check out these DIY shampoo recipes to save you some money and make your hair look great.

Fun fact: Did you know that until the 1930’s women didn’t commonly use shampoo to wash their hair? True story. In fact, shampoo as we know it today had not even been invented yet, meaning women used to wash their hair with plain ol’ soap and water. So why is it then that we modern day ladies are told we have to wash our hair with different products all the time to get thick, voluminous, shiny, healthy hair?

Marketing, my friends, pure marketing. I mean, someone has to get rich off us, don’t they?

Well not anymore.

Today it is my personal mission to break down why you no longer need to spend your hard-earned dollar dollar bills on this unnecessary product. I call it The “No ‘Poo For You” movement. I think it’s catchy. So let’s get into it.

The Harmful Effects of Shampoo

We are often led to believe that if we don’t buy this product or order that serum we are going to look dirty, our hair will look ratty, and our tresses will morph into a beehive ‘do full of dreadlocks.

Not so much.

In fact, store-bought shampoo (and not the organic products) actually do more harm than good for your hair, stripping away the sebum or natural oils that our scalp produces. And guess what? These oils are actually good for your hair! You want these oils. Heck, you NEED these oils. Especially for all you girls with curls, using these shampoos is actually what is contributing to those frizzies you may try to tame.

So what can we ladies do?

DIY Shampoo Recipes to the Rescue!

Liquid Shampoo

In a jar, squeeze bottle, or plastic container with a pump on top combine:

  • 1/4 cup of coconut milk
  • 1/3 cup of organic baby shampoo (or if you’re super hard up, use Aveeno)
  • 1 teaspoon of vitamin E oil, olive, or even almond oil
  • 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil (more if you want it to smell super awesome!)

Then just pop a top on that bad boy and shake it.

What makes this natural shampoo so beneficial is not only do you only need to use it sparingly (once or twice a week), but it locks in your hair’s natural moisture and ultimately helps to take better care of this lovely planet of ours. And on top of that, it’s much more affordable then buying new shampoo every month. It’s a win-win!

But what if you just don’t have the time to shower?

Dry Shampoo

This recipe is a little different because not only do you not use liquids but you also don’t need to shower. Bonus!

Grab yourself a small bowl and simply mix:

  • 8 – 10 drops of your favourite essential oil
  • 2 tablespoons of corn starch
  • 2 tablespoons of rice flour
  • 2 tablespoons of arrowroot

Once you have your ingredients in the bowl, give it a good stir for a few minutes to make sure it is well mixed, and then pour into a clean, dry spice shaker. Shake the mixture directly onto your roots, or onto your hands and massage it into your roots. Following that, run a brush through your hair to make sure it’s evenly distributed, style, and go.

No fuss, no muss.

Whichever method you choose for your natural ‘poo, as long as you can ride out the first few initial days of the greasies – called the “transition period” –  you should be able to wean your tresses off those chemical-laden shampoos in only a few weeks. And save yourself some coin.

Remind me again why I was buying shampoo for all those years?
