Feelgood Quickie: Mindful Eating

Feelgood Quickie

Here is a little tidbit for you to chew on today…Mindful Eating.

In our rushed and harried lives, how many of us truly eat mindfully?  And why should we?

We are all familiar with different types of diets, but some classify mindful eating as the “anti-diet.”  Mindful eating is not so much about what you eat as being present while you are eating.  With its roots in Buddhist culture, mindful eating can help relieve stress, improve health, and even help with food-related neuroses.

Mindful Eating

Rather than shoveling something in because it is that time of the day, check in with yourself to see if you are truly hungry and if you are acutally hungry for the food you are about to eat.  Take your time; savor the colors, texture, taste and aroma of the food.

Admittedly, most days (probably much like you) I eat the exact same thing for breakfast and lunch because I need food, not because I am particularly hungry for it.  And there is definitely no savoring going on.  Dinner may be a different story, but it is often rushed too.

What if you could kick your bad food habits, improve your health, and even relieve some stress by simply tuning in while you eat?  May be worth a shot. Want to learn more about mindful eating? The New York Times recently did a great story on mindful eating that is worth a read.
