DIY Hair Treatments Straight from the Kitchen

DIY Hair Treatments

Yogurt and eggs sound like a pretty healthy breakfast, but who would ever have thought that they could also make for natural, yet powerful, DIY hair treatments? And they aren’t the only ingredients in your pantry that are great for your hair. Oh no. Stock your kitchen with avocados, lemons, heck even beer, and your hair will reap the benefits of using natural ingredients. And your bank account? Well it will reap the benefits of not having to shell out hundreds of dollars on expensive salon treatments that ravage your hair with chemicals.

But what combinations should you use and for which hair issues? Well read on, sister, because your kitchen is a few minutes away from becoming a full functioning, DIY organic salon.

DIY Egg Hair Mask For The Masses

Eggs. They are not only good for you but they are amazing for pretty much all hair types.

The yolk in raw eggs is rich in good-for-you fats, proteins and is surprisingly moisturizing, while the raw egg white contains enzymes that not only eat unwanted bacteria but also helps to remove excess oils. Not bad for one little egg. So how do you put these mini powerhouses to work?

DIY hair treatment: Use a whole egg to condition normal hair; if your hair is oily use just the egg white; or if you want to moisturize hair that is dried out, only use the egg yolk.

Simply mix 1/2 cup of your chosen egg mixture (whites, yolks, or both), and apply it to clean, damp hair. If 1/2 cup isn’t enough to coat your whole head just mix some more. Leave the mixture in your hair for 20 minutes before rinsing it out with cool water. Make sure you don’t use hot water because the last thing you want is to cook the egg that is mixed in with your hair. That would not be a good look.

Once you have rinsed it out, wash your hair, rinse again, and dry your hair. You should notice a difference, but if you don’t, do not repeat the treatment right away. Whole egg and pure yolk treatments should only be used once a month, whereas egg white treatments should only be used every two weeks.

Say Goodbye to Lackluster Hair

The products we use everyday, as well as all the pollution in the air, may leave a film on your hair that can dull the look of it. However, ingredients like plain organic yogurt can help restore that natural shine to your locks and reverse any damage. On top of that it makes for a healthy snack, so if you feel a little peckish mid-treatment, by all means, indulge in a spoon or two.

DIY hair treatment: Rub 1/2 cup of plain yogurt onto clean damp hair and let it sit there for 20 minutes before rinsing it out with warm water. Follow that warm water rinse with a splash of cool water and then a regular shampoo to make sure you get it all out. After a few yogurt treatments you should notice your hair has more of a healthy shine to it. Just make sure you don’t repeat this treatment more than twice a month.

Beat Dry, Itchy Scalp

Possibly one of the most unsightly hair conditions has to be dandruff or a scalp that flakes when you itch it. To fight this annoying condition which can be caused by stress, climate, or even a bad diet, use natural lemon juice mixed with olive oil. While this combo makes for a tasty salad dressing it also helps to get rid of any dry flakes of skin on your scalp and moisturize both the dry and damaged skin and the newly exposed skin on your head.

DIY hair treatment: Mix 2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 2 tablespoons of water and rub onto your damp scalp. Again, let it sit in your hair for 20 minutes before rinsing it out and then shampooing your hair as you normally would. You should start to see a reduction in flakes soon after, but make sure to not repeat this treatment more than twice every month otherwise you might end up with hair that is too oily.

Work That Body

Fine, limp hair can look, well, limp. Not exactly a salon quality look. However fine, limp hair is easily fixed with a little beer. Yes, beer. Trust me, it’s not just for drinking anymore. Beer gives limp hair body as it contains lots of yeast, and yeast works to pump up your limp locks.

DIY hair treatment: Pour yourself 1/2 cup of beer, and don’t drink it. Instead, let it sit for a few hours until it goes flat. I would suggest you stir it to speed up the process, but that would probably just end in one big foamy mess. Once the beer is flat mix in 1 teaspoon of sunflower oil, and one raw egg. Stir to combine.

Apply your mixture to clean, damp hair and let it sit for about 15 minutes before rinsing it out with cool water. Again, we don’t want the egg to cook so make sure the water is nice and cool. What’s great about this treatment is once the liquid in the mixture starts to evaporate, the remaining protein helps to strengthen your hair, adding a little lift to your limp hair. Also make sure you don’t use this treatment more than twice a month.

Fight The Frizz

A bad hair day or undesirable weather is no longer an excuse for unruly, frizzy hair. At least, not when you have avocados lying around your kitchen.

Avocados are full of light, moisturizing oils that are similar to our own skin secretions. On top of that the proteins found in avocados make for a powerful combination of nutrients that help to smooth out unruly hair. But before you go making guacamole with it, try this treatment to tame those wild tresses.

DIY hair treatment: Using one half of an avocado, mash it up, stir in 2 tablespoons of sour cream or egg yolks, and massage it into clean, damp hair. Let the mashed up mixture sit in your hair for 15 minutes before rinsing it out with warm water. As with the rest of the treatments, make sure you don’t do this treatment more than twice a month.

Salon quality hair doesn’t have to drain your bank if you stock your kitchen with these ingredients and let your inner hair stylist loose. You’ll not only save your dollar dollar bills, but you’ll be saving your hair from harsh synthetic chemicals. All while being a little bit nicer to our environment. It’s a win-win!
