How to Spring Clean While Keeping it Green

how to spring clean

This one goes out to all my crafty, green-minded, DIY ladies!

Recently I have been testing out my own cleaning products using some staple ingredients that you can find just about anywhere. Since I like to keep a pretty clean abode it was important to me that my DIY cleaners have the same cleaning power as the ones I could buy in the store. So I did a little reading around the web and found some pretty awesome recipes.

Luckily for you, I’ve done the hard work so all you have to do is simply copy these recipes! Here’s how to spring clean without the harmful chemicals.

Anti-Bacterial Spray

Instead of turning to the familiar and opting for a brand like Lysol which can cover your everyday surfaces with chemicals, simply pick yourself up some lavender oil. While lavender oil might seem a little pricey at first, with how little you will use it will eventually work out to be a few cents per cleaning solution.

How to make it: Simply combine 1 cup of water with 20 drops of lavender essential oil. While it smells amazing, lavender is also very high in linalool which is a natural anti-bacterial and will help to disinfect any surface you spray it on.

All-Purpose Cleaner

This cleaning solution has to be my favorite. Not only is it easy to make but it cleans everything from counters to floors. One thing to note is you should mix this one over a sink as there will be a whole lot of bubbles and overflowing action going on. Think grade school volcano project.

The best part about this cleaner is you can use it every day, leaving your home naturally clean, and your bank account in good shape.

How to make it: Mix 2 cups of hot water, 3 tablespoons of white vinegar, half a teaspoon of sodium carbonate (also known as washing soda, which is different from baking soda), and half a teaspoon of castille soap (such as Dr. Bronner’s)

The Tough Stuff

This is by far the strongest of the cleaning products and is ideal for scrubbing hard-to-clean surfaces like bathtubs, showers, sinks, or even tiles. Again, you should mix this solution over a sink as there will be some bubbles and overflowing going on. Also you should make sure you pour this mixture into a squirt bottle or a glass jar as opposed to a spray bottle as it’s a much thicker solution.

How to make it: combine 1/2 cup of water, 2/3 of cup of baking soda, 1/2 cup of castile soap, 2 tablespoons of white vinegar, and a few drops of tea tree oil–a powerful natural oil that cleans and disinfects.

Once you have your cleaners mixed together you can rest assured that you will be saving tons of money in the long run, as well as the environment. So go ahead, mix up these earth-loving cleaning solutions, grab some reusable rags, and get your guilt-free spring clean on!
