3 Quick Fixes for Natural Vacation Skincare

healthy vacation skin

by Jill Clark

It’s that time of year again. It’s getting colder, it’s gloomy outside, and you haven’t seen the sun in a week straight. Daydreams of jetting off to a gorgeous island in the Caribbean become daily distractions until you finally, FINALLY, give in and book that week away in paradise!

Leading up to the trip you are giddy and pre-planning outfits; matching this bathing suit with that sarong, these flats with that maxi dress, and trying to choose colours that will make your tan pop. The thought of sun damage, and the havoc it can wreak on your skin, is probably the furthest thing from your mind as you prepare to get your tan on.

But before you take off for a week of fun in the sun, have you given proper thought to your skin?

The Sun Ain’t So Fun

We all know that the sun is harmful to our skin and that overexposure to its UV rays can cause significant damage to our skin. Some vacationers downplay a week of daily sun exposure, in locations where the sun’s rays may be stronger, as acceptable because it doesn’t happen that often, however, just that one week of consistent exposure can leave you with lasting effects.

Contrary to popular belief, a tan is not healthy. In fact, it is a tell-tale sign of skin damage and the tanned colour is your skin’s attempt at preventing UV rays from doing any further damage to the sensitive skin cells in your epidermis.

Even more unhealthy – the sunburn. When you burn, the sun’s rays are actively killing your living skin cells right into the deep layers of your skin. This is not a good look for us.

While most of us try to plan accordingly, sometimes in our rush to get away we forget some of favourite products. I can’t tell you how many times I have been too excited to leave for vacation that I forget my face cleanser, my body lotion, even my bathing suit. True story.

Instead of buying over-priced everyday moisturizers, or facial cleansers that are laced with chemicals which you probably can’t even pronounce, look around you. Take stock of the local ingredients provided to you by good ol’ Mother Nature.

Since I’ve been in this position a few times myself, I have discovered 3 quick fixes for naturally beautiful skin while on vacation!
