Natural Alternative to Petroleum Jelly

Last week in our series on Cosmetic Ingredients to Avoid we talked about petroleum.  And heading into winter this one can be particularly difficult to avoid.  While I certainly do not opt to use petroleum jelly, I will fully admit there is nothing quite like it for rapid recovery of a dry skin issue.

But I think I have found its nontoxic equal.  Recently a new beauty product popped up on my radar.  RMS Beauty Raw Coconut Cream.  It is only one ingredient (Coconut oil) but cold-pressed, ultra-pure virgin Coconut oil extracted from fresh coconuts without the use of high temperatures or solvents.

Coconut oil is light weight but highly emollient and adds a protective layer to skin much like petroleum jelly…only without the nasty contaminants.  It is also rich in Vitamin E and antioxidants, also unlike petroleum, and smells super yummy.  That delicious scent is a real bonus in cold months.

Coconut oil is also cooling, making it a great treatment for irritated skin and conditions like eczema.  So far in our home we have put this amazing product to many uses and are delighted at the outcome:

  • Takes off eye makeup in a snap
  • Toned down and lubed up the dry/irritated spots on my face
  • Took care of dry, rough knuckles super fast
  • Softened our dry lips
  • Healed my son’s shin-guard induced eczema

For use on face, body and even as a deodorant!  Comes in a 2.5 ounce jar and since Coconut oil solidifies when cool, will last a very long time.  At $18 a jar that is a very reasonable, all-purpose petroleum alternative.  The frosty, unlabeled, minimalist jar even looks good sitting on your bathroom sink.  And like I said before, it’s nontoxic and smells like summer…
