Natural Solutions for Hypopigmentation

Reader Question:

Any recommendations for hypO-pigmentation? I have it along my jaw lines.

Answer:

First off, let’s not confuse hypo-pigmentation with hyper-pigmentation.  Hypo is a lack of melanin/white spots on the skin, where hyper is when the skin produces excess melanin resulting in dark spots.  Hypo-pigmentation is most often the result of some sort of damage to the skin (acne, scarring, infection, or skin resurfacing treatments.

While the two are very different in appearance, they can be treated similarly.  The best way to reduce hypo-pigmentation is to protect skin from sun damage, which can bring these white spots on in the first place.  A good mineral sunscreen should be used regularly.

There are certain natural ingredients that help with evening out skin tone and reducing the appearance of spots.  White and Green tea extracts contain antioxidants that protect the skin from sun and environmental damage.  Vitamins A, C and E help to even out the skin tone and reduce the appearance of scarring and spots.

Pratima Skincare Rare Earth Mask is a good one to try.  All of the Pratima ayurvedic products are so luxurious and spa-like, a true pleasure to use.  This mask contains Vitamins A, C and E.
Lavera My Age line contains these ingredients, is super gentle and offers anti-aging benefits to boot.
Keys Luminos Hydrating Moisturizer is made with Carrot oil and Orange essential oils, and boasts properties that lend a smooth, soft appearance.  I have not tried Keys personally, but know many who swear by them.

Rosehip oil is very beneficial in healing and evening out the complexion.  One of my all time faves is Trilogy 100% Organic Rosehip Oil – hydrates, smooths and keeps skin glowing.

If you would like to try making some of your own home remedies, Julie Gabriel’s Green Beauty Recipes book is a wealth of diy knowledge.  Be sure to check out Oats and Olive Rich Moisturizer.

Remember to take good care of your skin – cleanse and moisturize twice daily, a gentle exfoliation bi-weekly, good sun protection, and nix the rough stuff (picking, squeezing, laser treatments, and harsh peels).
