Natural Solutions for Hypopigmentation

Reader Question:

Any recommendations for hypO-pigmentation? I have it along my jaw lines.

Answer:

First off, let’s not confuse hypo-pigmentation with hyper-pigmentation.  Hypo is a lack of melanin/white spots on the skin, where hyper is when the skin produces excess melanin resulting in dark spots.  Hypo-pigmentation is most often the result of some sort of damage to the skin (acne, scarring, infection, or skin resurfacing treatments.

While the two are very different in appearance, they can be treated similarly.  The best way to reduce hypo-pigmentation is to protect skin from sun damage, which can bring these white spots on in the first place.  A good mineral sunscreen should be used regularly.

There are certain natural ingredients that help with evening out skin tone and reducing the appearance of spots.  White and Green tea extracts contain antioxidants that protect the skin from sun and environmental damage.  Vitamins A, C and E help to even out the skin tone and reduce the appearance of scarring and spots.
