Green Diva’s Guide to Fresh Style: Avoid the Hanger Hissy Fit

Hanger Hamper
The Hanger Hamper

If you are anything like me, there is a place in your closet (or closets) where there is a mess of hangers that are knotted up and taking up more air space than they should. They are the scourge of landfills AND the closet!

Have you ever had that moment when you are trying to extract ONE hanger and it has somehow gotten woven in some celtic knot with several other hangers and no matter how hard you try to stay calm and remove it rationally, you end up screaming in frustration and using brute force to pull it out only to have it contort into an unusable shape while spraying the other hangers around the closet (and I usually end up on the floor with my shoes, exasperated and chuckling at myself, hoping that nobody witnessed the scene and captured it for YouTube).

Aside from my personal trauma with hangers that seem to multiply like rabbits in my closet, there is the impact on the rest of the world to consider.

3.5 BILLION hangers end up in landfills
in the US every year!

Makes my little scene in the closet seem kind of insignificant, huh?

Some dry cleaners will take the hangers back and a progressive few even offer incentives like coupons. We’ve gotten our dry cleaners to take them back and reuse them, but I’ve got to convince them that they should reward us for it . . . still working on that part.

Meanwhile, one clever company has come up with one way to help organize and recycle these wire beasts. The Hanger Hamper is an awesome little triangle container with handles designed to store hangers neatly for temporary storage before recycling.

When I got a press release about this one, I jumped at the opportunity to test it and it has indeed already provided some relief from the closet drama with easy collection and travel to the dry cleaners. Stores very neatly in a corner of the closet. Nice price point too – $9.95. Look for it on Amazon, Solutions.com, or Improvementscatalog.com and get up off the floor of your closet!
