Get set for lashings of the longest-wearing, volumizing, lengthening and conditioning organic & natural mascara money can buy!

Just because I want to wear organic and natural makeup, doesn’t mean I don’t want my cosmetics to perform as well as their conventional others. When it comes to mascara, in particular I want big, beautiful, thick, luscious lashes with tons of volume (think Bambi not Tammy Faye Baker), and I want it on my lashes, not smearing around my eyes by the end of the day! So here goes… a round-up of the hottest new launches and some stalwart old faves that are tried and tested:

Josie Maran Mascara – A consistent award-winner that has outperformed conventional mascara on more than one occasion, this gives nicely defined lashes and has a formula that stays put.

100% Pure Fruit-Pigmented Mascara: This delivers the longest lashes I’ve ever seen and builds volume at the same time as well as being long-wearing. Love that the color comes from fruit not mineral pigments.

Organic Glam Mascara: Five years in the making this mascara lengthens, curls, builds volume and conditions all in one.

Lavera Organic Volume Mascara: This has an advanced shaping brush that delivers volume and color to every lash and it removes easily.

Miessence Organic Mascara: One of the vanguards of modern organic beauty this formula from Miessence builds thick, healthy lashes that don’t dry to a crusty finish.

ZuZu Luxe Mascara: Gives a nice natural finish with one coat that looks like your lashes, but with some pop.

Living Nature Thickening Mascara: Uses halloysite clay for building volume to give maximum drama.

Dr Hauschka Mascara: Makes lashes look full without being over the top and helps keep them conditioned & strengthened.

Lotus Certified Organic Mascara: Coffee extract with rice protein and sunflower oil conditions, thickens and lengthens with every stroke of the brush.

Physicians Formula Organic Wear Mascara: Boosts lash length, volume and definition without clumping or flaking.

Love the Lavera Volume Mascara. It goes on smooth and never clumps!

Good list – except that Tarte’s mascara isn’t remotely natural, despite the green “S” next to it on sephora.com. I would also say that no list is complete without Couleur Caramel’s mascara. Also, I recently tried new Lotus natural mascara, and it is fantastic!!!

I don’t give any credence to Sephora’s ‘green’ list either – it’s meaningless. The Tarte Mascara isn’t 100% natural but given that it’s only going on lashes and not being absorbed into skin, I couldn’t see anything in the ingredient list that gave me HUGE cause for concern. What do you love about the new Lotus mascara? I’m always hunting for the holy grail… :)

Acutally, Terri… let’s take out Tarte and replace it with Lotus. Good call – looks great!

I’m the odd woman out and like my mascara on the thin and smooth side v. thick. Which is Lotus? Thin or thick?

        • http://www.natureofbeauty.com Terri Bly

A bit thinner – reminds me a lot of Clinique’s Naturally Glossy mascara.

I’m a MAJOR fan of the 100% Pure Mascara – talk about looooooooong lashes… from bottom to the very tip, they get coated in color!

Do you know if any of these are waterproof, or at least water resistant? I wear contacts and find that I’m always getting dust in my eyes and crying, so most natural mascaras don’t work well for me. Though I’m no expert on mascara, I’ve had great success with Ere Perez Natural Almond Oil Mascara. They make a waterproof version as well, but even with lots of tears the Almond Oil version has not smudged at all and I think it makes my eyes look quite nice.

    • http://www.futurenatural.com Emma Pezzack

Nikki, unfortunately a truly waterproof natural or organic mascara doesn’t exist yet to my knowledge. They’re all smudge-resistant but water-resistant? It really depends on how you put them through their paces and how much sweat, tears, or other moisture they’re subjected to. Annoying, but it comes down to trial and error. Sorry to not be more help! Ere Perez sounds great – I’ll have to look into it…

thanks so much for writing this! I forgot my cosmetics on a recent trip so went to Sephora with this list. They only had the Josie Marantz, but it’s great! much better than some others I’d been trying. Plus they’re doing some charity thing now where each purchase they match with a gift of mascara to a cancer patient/survivor. Hope the chemo leaves them with at least some lashes to apply it to.

    • http://www.futurenatural.com Emma Pezzack

Susanna, your proactivity is SO awesome!! Good for you… The mascara you’re talking about is called GOGO and for every one purchased Josie Maran is giving one to a cancer patient survivor at City Of Hope Charity up to a certain number, then they’re donating cash from each sale. Love it.

Most of these are rating fairly decent on the cosmeticsdatabase.com except Dr.Hauschka. It rates a 5 or 6 depending on the color you buy. Is there another mascara you can find that’s less toxic that works well?

    • http://www.futurenatural.com Emma Pezzack

      All of the above :)

This is one of my favorite lists (and not just because Miessence is listed). I frequently refer people to it. In fact, I just posted it to a LinkedIn discussion about natural mascaras.

Very cool Danika – and that’s the point – to share this info so people can be informed…
