I just recently went through this process. I live in a townhome with an old dishwasher that I cannot replace. In almost all areas of my life, I diligently try to be eco friendly. I'm also very allergic to synthetic fragrances, and dishwasher detergent is a chemical stew. So, I tried Ecover, Seventh Generation, and Palmolive Eco (which was by far the worst). My mom had a Bosch and Ecover always worked fine in it. Well, my dishes turned out just as yours did. While I'm willing to sacrifice to be eco friendly, I simply cannot abide filthy dishes and detergent that doesn't work in my machine. I've grudgingly gone back to Cascade. (Also, I ran Lemi Shine through my machine full of "clean" dishes and it removed all the scum beautifully.)

I love Seventh Generation detergent and it's great because you could technically "eat" it...no bleach, unlike that "eco" palmolive kind, which doesn't contain phthalates (good for them) but still has bleach which is horrible for those precious streams they say they're promoting. You certainly couldn't drink that! A great new video put out about toxins in our everyday products: http://awakeupstory.healthychild.org/

I haven't tried Trader Joe's kind yet. We'll have to give it a go. Great blog. :)

I've been quite happy with Seventh Generation - I seem to have to rinse the dishes very well prior to washing them but I just haven't had a huge success with any of the environmentally friendly dishwasher detergents, have been happiest with this one so I'm going to stick to it for now.
