Zulugrass jewelry is handcrafted jewelry created by Maasai women out of environmentally sustainable grass grown in the Kenya area. The results are beautiful, stylish, sustainable and fashionable jewelry that can be worn in a variety of ways.
The Leakey Collection has created over 1200 jobs and over 10,000 people are supported by the efforts of the Leakey Collection.
The stretchy bands of grass can be worn in a multitude of ways, as necklaces, bracelets, hair ties, anklets, arm bands, or even around your waist. They come in over 200 colors and look very fun to play with and wear in new and creative ways. What gets me is that they are made from grass. Grass! That is so green...
The Maasai people live in the Rift Valley in the areas of Kenya and Tanzania. In 2001 a drought almost destroyed everything. Philip and Katy Leakey who live among the Maasai created contemporary products using sustainable materials in the area, they decided to help the people of the area by offering them jobs using their own skills and traditional ways of beading to create beautiful and sustainable jewelry in non factory settings that span over 150 miles in Rift valley area.
Over 1000 Maasai women now help create Zulugrass and Zuluwood products sold through The Leakey Collection.
