Natalie Portman Donates Shoe Profits to Environmental Preservation and Animal Rights
Natalie Portman Has Our Unabashed Support
While we’re on the topic of ethical footwear this week, Natalie Portman has recently designed a line of vegan shoes for Té Casan, and she is having a sale.
In between being a superstar, a main feature in Elle and speaking out for PETA, she has also found the time to design darling animal-free footwear. Her designs are cute, classic and sophisticated. I dig the Potok and the Pixie (shown below), both on sale.
Natalie has been a vegetarian since age 8, and always noticed the lack of animal-friendly footwear in the luxury designer marketplace. “Té Casan, well-versed in recognizing and developing new talent, collaborated with Portman for her 100% vegan collection.”
While I like her style, and the fact she represents PETA, I wonder if these shoes are truly sustainable. Are they bio-degradable? Or are they recycle-able? Will they soon be made with the Cradle to Cradle Philosophy in mind? These shoes have synthetic soles and materials. Yes, they are animal-friendly, but in the long-view are they really better for the earth upon which all animals depend? Maybe a new environmentally-friendly shoe material will be invented soon for her to source from. For now, Natalie has done her share to protect the planet as one of the best aspects of this footwear line is that 100% of the proceeds go to the Nature Conservancy.

The public turns to PETA to protect animal rights because the organization is on the map and recognized. Personally, I wish activists would read the fine print and also acknowledge PETA’s destructive methods for publicity, which includes a history of criminal activities.
I too question sustainablity status by using synthetics over natural materials. Wildlife especiallly needs protection from environmental pollution caused by the manufacturing of these synthetic materials that simulate genuine leather. Thank you Lucille for a deeper look at “sustainability” claims.
Tip: Read the fine print about PETA’s position of domesticated pets. They don’t want your dog to have a fence or leash, much less be neutered! There are other choices to support wildlife and pets.

Hi, yes I am working developing and promoting water based PU syntehtic leather. I am an Australian and
I also enjoy the green aspect of my life coming from a small coatal town in Australia.
My good friend developed a full water based PU resin coating System to replace the harmful DMF use and other solvents that go with making PU leather.
I am not going to use this forum to push our product but just to say that unless people are prepared to start looking for alternatives then we will all be worse off.
I am now living in China and I respect the people here, we are wearing the brunt of the worlds pollution as cost out rides the environment issues. The fact is the cost of the water based system would drastically drop if it became popular.
So I go about my every day routine of trying to push a superior product that we believe in and hope that the companies vision is finally rewarded.
We are also coating a recycled PET base cloth as well. Should be walking out the door as our clients agree with its feel, breathability, light weight,etc. But sorry just a little to expensive.
For a pair of shoes that cost about $5.00 to produce and sell for over $100 where is the extra 50 cents going to come from. The environment if we dont wake up.
